I'm having trouble with my 2002 tacoma. It doesn't want to start after sitting over night. It fires up immediately but dies. After a few attempts and pumping the gas it starts running. Does anyone know what would cause this.

you shouldnt have to pump a fuel injected vehicle...sounds like a sensor problem such as Throttle position sensor. Do you have a CEL?

There is no CEL. I changed the air flow sensor and that didn't help. I just recently purchased the vehicle as is. Everything else on the vehicle seems to be working in good condition. I live in CA

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I'm going to guess something with the egr system but I could be wrong. Good luck, Man!

After the initial start up in the morning it fires up immediately every time. This only happens after the truck his been sitting for several hours.

TPS is worn out I bet

bad TPS and dirty MAF are the top culprits on otherwise clean vehicles

Maybe try a new coolant temp sensor

I had a mechanic look the truck over before I bought it. He thinks it might be the fuel pump. I wanted to get some other opinions before I dive into that project

same thing with my 04, usually it would sit overnight and if it was very/cold the truck had a hard start, it did it the first week of ownership new. drove me crazy till I started searching forums/internet and found the TSB I was covered under warranty. first tsb added a heavier ground/battery cable but didn't cure the problem, took it in for #2 tsb added an extended fuel suction tube in the gas gas tank to the fuel pump that cured it for good never happened again. from what I researched about it online most 3.4ls get this, maybe some folks just live with it I couldn't.

Could try changing out the fuel filter and see if that does it, they're cheap ($20) and easy to get to on the v6 (inside the frame rail behind the driver's seat).

    I been lucky

    250,000+ on my 99 5vzfe

    and stumbles like this

no start hard start after a few hours

was always TPS or dirty MAF

    ------------------------------------------
pumping the gas does nothing to fuel system or pressure
    unless engine is running.

so, pre-start hitting the gas a few times...

it does scrape the TPS and throttle butterfly

anyhow..if you do get a new TPS go with OEM. aftermarkets are notorious for working for
about 8 tanks or a few months...and them they crap out and act up again (shit quality)
been there...opened up both my old original one and new aftermarket and was appalled
at how cheesy the pot was on the aftermarket. such a simple sensor but cheap ones are -cheap-

I'm going to change out the TPS and the fuel filter tomorrow. Hopefully that works. Thanks for the advise everyone.
