It's just sad that they weren't allowed to put more time into it, just imagine how many Tacoma/Hiluxes (and soon 4Runners) will be sold with this engine that was merely borrowed to cut costs. It's more than just losing .5 of a liter of displacement it's the fact that the engine, in essence, is COMPLETELY different. Just like Chevy releasing the plans to make a DOHC V8 engine to put in a Corvette, it just makes me sad because it's not the way it's supposed to be.

Blew up at the street. There is a thing called a snow plow that clears snow off of public streets. Driveways are not necessarily public streets. Lots of snow on driveway. Not lots of snow on public street. Stop douching up the thread.

2.4, 2.7, 3.4, 4.0, all are great engines. If i could only have one it would be the 3.4 though. Beautifully built engine. I have mixed feeling about what i have read and researched on the 3.5, only time will tell how toyota did with it. They should have brought the 3.4 back or stuck with the 4.0 in my opinion

    No more Turd-gen :)
I'm not sure where the hate comes from over the 3.5.
It's a decent engine and has a pretty low failure rate so far. It's got a couple shitty sensors installed but that can happen with any manufacfurer and does. Manufacturers out source sensors to companies like continental, Bosch, Siemens, etc and bad components happen.
The engine isn't a dog and feels quite lively with the power button pressed. Is it perfect for this truck? Maybe not but it's not horrible. The issues with the truck are in the programming, driveline, transmission, paint, body, rear end, radio and basically every other god damn component

Agreed, I wasn't a huge fan of the engine in my auto but after trading it in for a manual, its a completely different story. Like you mentioned, its not amazing but its certainly not awful. Compared to what happened in Jeep world when they dropped the inline 4.0 for the V6, I'm happy with what I have in the manual Tacoma!

How much would cost to install a 4.0 into a 3G Tacoma?

I am sure it would cost a fortune, at that point it would probably be better to just do a V8 swap.

If my truck ever needs an engine rebuild I will seriously consider a Tundra 4.7 swap, I know people that can do it for me.

Id think the difficult part would be getting a lot of the info and data systems to work with a different motor?

Technically you should shift to neutral before 4lo or something's going to get screwed up

That would be a waste of money.

4.6 or 5.7 tundra are upgrades over the 2gr. 4.7 makes LESS power...

It can be either way. Quality work is quality work a dirty shop or dirty area in a shop isn't entirely indicative of the quality of work. I've seen plenty of clean shops that do awful work. I've seen dirty shops that do good work and vice versa.
