I'm building something similar for my Dewalt tool boxes I got from HD. The one dewalt sells doesn't have a lock for the boxes like the cart does so why not make my own.[IMG]

Double is only required where studs are not directly bearing on ceiling roof. Otherwise a single top plate transfers the load correctly. (I do more steel and commercial so I could be wrong)

Yeah you can frame with a single top plate if you align your studs under your joists / rafters / trusses above just not that standard around here

I did both on my house when I built it...it has a double top plate and everything is stacked like you say. I also put my trusses on 16OC...which apparently surprised the guy when I ordered them,he said they normally two 2' OC with trusses. I've seen 2'OC roofs...they look like the ocean over time:)

I have seen some local framers use a single top plate when using trusses on top, I don't understand this. The 2nd top plate strengthens the lateral run of the wall and makes the tie stronger with intersecting walls. Just a better means of framing IMO.

"Green Building" programs push this stack framing (they call it "advanced framing") to cut material usage and waste. 2x6 24" oc stacked also means significantly less thermal bridging

I've never built anything like this and don't plan to start lol for the reasons u mentioned

Thought so we still line ours up, and double top plate because it's just easier to build longer walls and do tie ins.

Today I'm finishing up installing a 30 inch stove where a 29 inch drop in was at my moms. Did I mention the custom mahogany faced cabinets my father built 30 years ago. He built them in a built in style so this has been a blast. Thankfully she lives in the house that has the shop under it.
