For the sake of skipping a long thread bashing the new guy, I'll just say I've never, ever heard of this logic. I'll go further in saying that I try not to carry a perfectly clean gun, because I want to know that it fires in its current state. Cleaning = field stripping for me, and there's always that hint of doubt for me after I reassemble that maybe I didn't do it quite right.

I'll wipe down a gun after a range trip, but I don't break down my pistols to clean until they're really dirty, like after an extended session with a suppressor.

People get so anal over cleaning, but it's really not as necessary as many would have you believe. Primers and powder used to be corrosive and dirty. That's why old timers cleaned every time they shot. Today, they are not. Some are even self cleaning with decoppering agents added.

My range guns get cleaned about once a year or when they malfunction, whichever comes first. That's usually anywhere from 100-1000 rounds. My carry gun gets cleaned a little more often, but I shoot a magazine through it at least every 7-10 days, and I'm not going to bother cleaning it after one magazine. If your carry gun can't work 100% with that little use, get a better gun.

Clean as often as you feel you need to, just realize it's probably not as often as you really do. I'd rather spend my time shooting and reloading than cleaning guns every 3 or 4 days.

Nothing too exciting... maybe a little rust
When I first started getting into shooting I was religious about cleaning my guns after every shooting trip and tried to get them as clean as the day I bought them. After getting lazy a few times and letting them sit I found that it didn't seem to have much of an effect on accuracy or FTF so anymore I'll strip them down and give them a good cleaning once or twice a year but I'm not nearly as picky about getting every last bit of fouling off as I used to be.

Now I just think about how much time I wasted cleaning guns that could've been used for productive things like reloading ammo (which I am still anal as all hell about).

I really want a Colt series 70 in stainless all the sudden. Anyone have one of those? Thinking some pearl grips for just over the top bling.

Much to my delight, a heavy package arrived this morning. Is it common/ok to paint these a fluorescent orange color? I have a can that I use for my snowplow stakes. 6" & 8".

With the included hardware, the targets are at a nice downward tilt.

Oh - is there a proper/optimal angle the chains should hang at? My initial mock up on the 2x4's seemed too vertical.

    I'm probably over thinking this.

Yes, they were just ones that came on the bull's-eye targets (manufacture) , now they're orange like the rest

20" spread (on center) on the eye hooks did the trick. Placed the eye hooks on the rear of the 2x4 to keep the front clean. Just had them resting on saw horses, so I had to hold it vertical as it wanted to tip from the weight of the target.

Probably overkill & not needed. But the wood-worker in me took over. Had some extra clear Danish oil from some recent furniture projects, so I decided to treat the 2x4's. 2-3 coats should do it.
Once the weather warms some, I'll be painting the conduit flat black too.
I'll pick up some of those Velcro straps to bundle the conduit & 2x4's. The targets & brackets fit nicely in my gettho milk crate range box!

Apologies for the repeated posts, just excited to finally get these up & running.

Something interesting to note. The paperwork that came with the targets recommend 200yds for .223/5.56. Seems a bit far. I figured 100yds would be fine.

If that is AR 500 steel, then you'll be fine at 100 yards

I've hit mine at 100 yards with armor piercing 223 rounds and barely made a mark.

For rim fire I'll clean them every 300 rounds or so unless they start to malfunction before that.
My AR's I'll clean whenever I fee like it, I'll occasionally squirt some lube on them when they feel a little gritty/slow.

Center fire handguns will get cleaned after 700+ rounds or if they look to dirty from carry (lots of dust in my environment from bush hogging)

I tried fluorescent orange on my steel targets and it didn't work great so I switched to Cat yellow for some and New Holland Blue for others, both the blue and yellow are easy to see in most environments.

You'll find that you will have a bigger problem with your stands handling the energy of a big round more than the big round hurting the target
