I have a question for all of my fellow Taco owners. I have an 06 SR5 Double Cab, 4L, Auto. The truck only has 84k miles. Has anyone had an issue with the transmission speed sensor? Does anyone know what else is involved with the internal working of the transmission and sensor?
The truck has now been to the local stealership 4 times with no resolution.
1st trip, scanned ecu and came up with a wheel speed sensor, changed it, then was told to drive for 100 miles to reset/relearn the computer. Did that, and check engine light is still on.
2nd trip, scanned ecu and stated the transmission speed sensor is not operating properly. Ordered and reset computer. Now speedometer was erratic sometimes reading mph, sometimes bouncing around, sometimes nothing.
3rd trip, replaced both speed sensors on transmission. Everything was good for about 60 miles then back to sometimes to speedometer reading sometimes worked, along with the check engine light.
4th trip, where she is now, getting diagnosed now.
As a side note, everything else on the truck runs smooth (engine, startup, idle, driving, shifting).
Does anyone have an idea? Thanks for reading.

    What code(s)?

I'm getting a P0500 code that I've traced to the speedometer cluster. I can press on the lense and watch it read correctly-incorrectly as I press on it.

I've swapped everything you can think of and the speedometer cluster is the only part that I can tell is causing the malfunction. I have an UltraGage and when the UG stops getting a speed signal, the P0500 comes up and if I press hard on the cluster the mph reading comes back and I can clear the code. I've checked the connections and wiggled them trying to mimic the malfunction. It seems to be internal and it's much less frequent when the weather is warm or the truck has been sitting in the sun.

And now I am being informed that Toyota's Technical service is recommending replacement of the ABS module. I am now confused what the ABS module has to do with the VSS ECU?

I worked on a '98 with that same code. Replacing the VSS did not work.
Removing and repairing the cluster fixed it
(NOT by the dealer, but by a specialty speedo shop here in town).

That's one of the solutions the snapon scanner lists, but from what I've read will not fix the issue.

If you have an UltraGage you could find out pretty easy. The cluster needs to be replaced IMO.

I'm not sure if you can see it, but the UltraGauge is reading 0mph and I have the P0500 cel. When I pressed on the speedometer cluster the mph reading came back to the UltraGauge. At that point the code can be cleared and not return until the UltraGauge loses signal again.

If the transmission is upshifting , it means that the vehicle speed is being sent to the ECU . If there was a broken wire under the truck , you get no upshift because the ECU doesn't see the truck moving . I agree that the problem resides within the dash

My doesn't work some of the time and sometimes it bounces like in the video I attached.
Yesterday I pulled the cluster out of the truck, checked both connections, and put it back in. It still is about the same. The only thing is it does it less often now.
Other than the cel and speedometer not working properly, the truck drives and upshifts and downshifts like normal.

IMHO, the cluster issue is internal. Replace it or take to a speedo shop.

I finally got my truck back. And the culprit was the cluster. I ended up using an auto electric shop who actually tested the system and found the a voltage drop across the cluster from the wheel speed sensors. So finally, all is well.

I know this is a few years old but, I had a problem with my abs and I traced it back to the Abs module replaced that. Now my speedo won’t work, and have check engine light on dash. any solutions?

The abs control module is just the 6 lines and plugging it back in. Took it out exactly how I put it in.

Anyways couple days later. Ordered another part, 8J for the 4wd. Put it in speedo was working for roughly 6km then turned off and on as I’m driving, kept working till it dropped to 0 (I had a speedo on my phone it was accurate).

Weird thing was when I put it in, it started pumping (turning on and off, keys were out) I assume it’s the safety feature if there’s air in the system? There’s no way 2 parts could be broken.
