From here on out, all of my Hilux photos will be posted in this thread!

Question from another thread that was merged into this one:

Also, what do people think of the 3.0L V6...?

Any engine is good if you take care of it, but I've heard some things about the 3.0L used until 1995 experiencing various premature mechanical failures. Everything from head gaskets to crank shafts to oil pressure...

I also have some old copies of Consumer Reports from the 1990s, which were given to me by an uncle who found them while cleaning his house, and they describe the 2nd Gen T4R as being rather sluggish and underpowered. I'd have to look at my 1994 and 1995 editions of the CR car issue, but I do not recall the T4R being flagged for reliability issues...

That said, I've never driven a Toyota pickup or T4R with the 3.0L...

The only Toyota truck from that era I've ever had the honor of driving was a 1991 regular cab short bed 2WD with a 2.4L and 5-speed handshaker. It did not even have power steering or power brakes, but it did not feel underpowered in the slightest despite having less power than most so-called compact cars have today, I'd classify it as downright enjoyable to drive in terms of handling and performance.

Honestly, if I were seeking out a 1989-1995 era pickup or T4R, 4x4 or 2WD, I'd only want one with the 2.4L and 5-speed.

What does everyone else think of the 3.0L?

This is my uncle's 1991 Toyota pickup (22RE/5-speed, 2WD) that he taught me how to drive stick in; No power steering or power brakes, and did not originally have A/C but my uncle installed an R134a A/C system from a wrecked 1994 T4R. The rims are from a 1974 AMC Hornet. The vent window doors are from the same wrecked 1994 truck that donated it's A/C system. The engine is totally stock except for a K&N air filter. It also has a killer stereo system. I think I covered everything but ask whatever you want; The pictures are from the summer of 2012...

4th of July fell on a Wednesday in 2012, and my family on my mom's side chipped in to rent a huge old house in Cape May for the entire week. This 3-story, 3-zone central air-conditioned Victorian monstrosity was located on Congress Place, right across the street from Congress Hall (seen in the background). I stepped out onto the front porch of the rental house not even an hour after my parents and I arrived, and saw this camper truck parked in a metered spot right across the street. Of course I took a few pictures, but this was almost 5 years ago and I honestly can't remember if it was a Toyota or a Datsun. I can't even read the emblem on the front fender (this was taken with a Nikon D3000, but it's a static download from Facebook and no longer what I would consider to be a high-quality picture):

It had quad side-by-side headlights and I vaguely remember an oddly shaped "T" in the the center of the grille though...

All hail Google! After the first member posted, I Googled "1976 Toyota pickup," and this picture was in the results. I distinctly remember now that this is what the front end looked like:

The 79-83 Toyota Hilux had either 2 round (79-81) or 2 square (82-83) headlights. Also the side marker lights are more obvious on the Toyota than the Datsun.

I talked to the owner when he came back, and all I remember him saying is that the factory A/C in the thing still worked... Don't remember anything else...

This is what the Datsun ones looked like. Very similar. But the Toyota has the little grill behind the door and the side reflector is lower on the Datsun.

So the one in your original photo is a Toyota. Just older, 1977 or something.
