I have a 2013 trd off road with the 4.0 engine. Noticed when I'm stopping and the rpm drops to around 1000 there is a faint knocking sound in the engine and some times at idle when the engine is cold at any other speed the engine is quite. Is this normal for the 4.0

What grade of gas are you running?

I've seen threads about it and some seem to hint it's normal (normal as in acceptable within the engine design) but higher octance gas cures it.

Of course, that is if the faint knocking you hear is the same as others.

I'm running 87 octane shell gas

This is normal. I hear this knocking sound when i'm going up steep hills, which is nearly every day. And grade of gas also plays into it.

use higher octane fuel and knocking will go away, I have a 2013 and it did the same thing on my using 87 octane, stepped it up to 89 octane and no more knock. problem solved

Not sure a knock at 1000 rpm has anything to do with fuel but if it does theres a reflash for pinging.
I had it done and all my pinging is now gone and I run 87 octane only.

I was unaware of a reflash for the pining, I wonder if its for the 13's, I will have to research it, thanks for the info.

I have a '13 and when engine was warm, low rpm accelerating and say it didn't down shift from 4th to 3rd and rpm stayed down I would have a "knock". There's a TSB at the dealership (which I had to show them because they couldn't find it) and it's free to have done. It's some place on this site. I downloaded it and took it with me because they had "never heard of it"
