    Hello,

I was a hardcore 2nd gen 22re user and am about to get back into Toyota pickups with a 70,000km(45,000mi) 2012 Tacoma I4 MT.

Feeling pretty comfortable with my new find until I started to come across low mileage smog pump/P2440/P2442 code issues resulting in several thousand $ dealership repair costs.

Is this enough of an issue to steer away from 2012 Taco's or is it's prevalence isolated?

    Thanks,
    Pete

You talking 2012 4.0? Rumored to have been fixed in 2013 but everyone is skeptical. There is a huge thread about it on this site

it's a 4 cylinder I'm looking at. Is the air injection pump issue not an issue in the 4 bangers?

I already went through a lot of your writing on this issue. That's what got me worried about my prospective purchase :)

Going back to your original question, I wouldn't have a problem buying that truck if price was to your liking. You now know how to do the repairs yourself or have a non dealership mechanic do it more cheaper than dealership.

I'm gambling that this issue will see some sort of true correction from Toyota. This is just too, much negative publicity.

I just hope it doesn't come to someone getting killed to make the correction happen.

Honestly, I can't remember if the 4 cylinders have the AIP system.

Just traded my 2012 4.0l after 70,000 miles. Not one single code or issue.

I was under the impression that it was a V6 problem, bUT they may use the same system in the 4 banger?

Regardless, accessing the valve and pump on 4 cylinder motor would be a dream.

Double check and make sure that the truck truly does have the engine immobilizer. I was under the impression that 4 cyl., manual trucks did not have the immobilizer system. Check for the key with a stamped "G" in it.

Otherwise, that's a very nice truck. Love the color.

The 4 banger does have the injection system. They had it for years. It's the same pump

Pull the top off the pump - it's one bolt. Pull the foam filter out of the pump. Put the pump back together. Pull the "prefilter" thing off the intake of the pump. Put this in its place https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003CJOTSA

The problem with the pumps is that the foam degrades and falls into the impeller, destroying the innards of the impeller. There are other issues with the system, but this will greatly help with the longevity of the pump.

After a quick search, it looks like the engine immobilizer is an anti theft feature? I haven't taken the key out of my vehicle in a decade since I moved back home here. That routine will likely change with the new truck :)

I will check the key for a G. Thank you for helping me recover some familiarity with these trucks, I've been away from them for to long.

Seems like a pretty solid community here on this forum. With my previous 22re's, I looked to toyotanation.com to help me through for many years but they've died down, and yotatech.com seemed to be largely inactive so I came here. Glad I did.

    Thanks,
    Pete

holy sufferin man aren't you just a godsend. I can't wait to take my laptop and show this thread to the dealer when I pick the truck up tomorrow to see what they have to say about it. Does Toyota have an acceptable replacement pre-filter that could be used as well or should I go exclusively with the UniFilter?

Thanks and have a great day, you guys sure made mine,
    Pete

Pigpen's suggestion is excellent - many with the air injection system on the 4-cylinders have used this solution with great success. However, not everyone has a problem with the foam block inside the pump. My truck is 11 years old and the foam is still soft and pliable, not crumbling or disintegrating at all. So it may not be necessary to implement the fix on your truck, not right now, but eventually we will have to do something... it's just a matter of time before they start to dry up. I'll be inspecting mine every couple years to keep an eye on it.

another great point of view. I've got the dealer looking to see if there is a TSB that was issued about this and if Toyota has an updated pre-filter for the secondary air pump that is not subject to degradation. Doesn't seem to take much time for filter deterioration in some situations while other owners don't experience the same problems.

I think I will include the same inspection that DGXR suggested into my service routine.

Is there a preventative maintenance thing like this for the 12 V6s as well? Or do I just wait for it to fail

The Uni-filter pigpen posted above can be applied on the v6 pump. In fact, my pump looks exactly like the one posted. I pulled my foam and added this filter about 4 months ago. I have a '12 v6.
