    Hey guys,
So like the title says, im wanting to upgrade from the crappy paper cone speakers to something with some better quality sound. However, I dont need a full fledged sound system in my truck. Ive already installed a pioneer avh-280bt double din HU that I'm happy with. I just cant decide which way to go with speakers.

I've been thinking good components in the front doors, 2 way coax in the rear, and maybe a self powered sub under the seat. Crutchfield reccommended Rockford fosgate R165.

Are components worth adding without an amp to power them? Or should i maybe look at 6x9 3way coax for the front doors instead?

    Thanks for the help!

Absolutely! Most speakers that are aftermarket will sound better on an amp.

The speakers you have now are rated for probably 10w RMS max! The ones you want to replace them with run 40w RMS max.

Now with that said.. your new HU pushes 14w RMS max to the speakers, the speakers you stated can go up to 40w RMS...

So you maybe underwhelmed by the performance of these speakers when you plug them in... Check out the Alpine Powerpack, this is easy to install, its small, and affordable. It will get you the power you need to get your speakers running.

When you get into RMS stuff, your speaking another language to me, but i think i get what you're saying. If i go with components, the HU will power them, but i won't get the best quality sound from them without an amp (such as the alpine unit you mentioned)

Im kinda in information overload from the research ive been doing :goingcrazy:

    Hahaha. no worries...

RMS= simply put.... what power your speakers want to run all the time on.

Peak= simply put... the max power your speakers can take before they blow

Speakers are also called "drivers", without enough power to "drive" the speakers you will not get the best performance. Really you will be losing out on low end bass and you may notice that the new speakers are not very loud.

Thank you! That makes sense to me.
So, with my head unit, plus a powerpack amp, which component speakers would you suggest?

I will have to do some research, but i would look for speakers with an RMS of around 40-50 RMS.
