    I stand corrected.

Both are definitely a fall/winter/early spring destination, summer days would be brutal down there. The evidence of flash flooding in San Lorenzo was impressive. There were trees with debris piled 15 feet high on the trunks and branches. We saw some great camping spots, but I wouldn't dare camp in that canyon if there was even a slight chance of rain.

    Have a safe trip.

Got to Albuquerque in August in 2001, short time later bought a Tacoma 4x4 then met a woman with the same wanderlust as me.
The rest is history, we have been trying see every corner of New Mexico ever since.
Still got a few more places to see that is on our list.

Living my screen name. New Mexico roamer.

It was a great trip, even with all the damn "NO TRESPASSING" Signs.

This is definitely going on my list of exploration trips.

It's good to see some snow on the ground out there. I read in the NMDGF fishing report last week that Bluewater Lake was up 16 feet and thought to myself that whole area must be melting off early.

Thanks again for the tire. I got it mounted & balanced today and it's going to work well. Definitely a tight fit under the vehicle.

Good stuff, man. It looks like you were over on the east side, south of Ponderosa... is that about right?

It's worth the drive... it reminded me of Monticello canyon, but with more areas to explore on foot.

Sorry that nobody had any tips for you, but your request was kind of vague (no info as to what kind of camping, what level of hiking, how equipped are you, what area of the state are you passing through, etc). There are also many ideas available within this thread.

You're coming too early in the year. Most of the good stuff will be snowed in and lots of FS roads still closed for winter. If you happen to see this, look at areas from Santa Fe south.

The family and I took a little ride today. We were going to do La Bajada in my wife's 4Runner, then check out Dome road.

Unfortunately, I've got bad news. The Pueblo of Cochiti closed the access to the old La Bajada road a few weeks ago. The access has always been on tribal land and we were always technically trespassing when using the trail. I spoke with a tribal employee and he told me they were having problems with people partying back there and leaving the place trashed so they fenced it and locked all the gates. Bye bye forever. The only way to run it now will be to come around from the north the long way through Buckman road or through La Cienega, and it would have to be a down then back up affair. All of that is ASSUMING that they don't have it gated at the top as well.

We tried to hit Dome road as a backup plan, but it was still closed for the winter. Then we tried Cochiti lake for a picnic, but all the day use areas were closed. Finally we decided to check out Waldo Canyon Road off I25 at the top of La Bajada and follow that into Los Cerillos / Madrid / N14 back to I40. We hit a few side roads off Waldo, but nothing too exciting. Me and the kiddo made the most of it and found some fun things to do.

Good times, fellas. Thanks for showing me around, and thanks to Chris for giving me the nudge I needed to try some new, and very fun, things with my rig. Maybe next time I'll shoot the berm.

Where are some good trails to hit throughout the state/Albuquerque area? The only place I have really adventured out to before is the puerco west of rio rancho. Now that I have my truck I want to explore some more.

I'm not trying to be an asshole but it seems to be abundant as we roll into summer here. Between the BS thread and this thread it seems like we get some really easily researchable questions. While people may take the time to answer them your not gunna get the best info that way. I spent 5 min and went back 15 pages and found some crazy detailed trail runs with videos, links, forest road numbers and pictures so you can see the types of rigs and terrain. Way more info than someone will probably care to post again. Look through the pages here, it's a dictionary that many have spent a lot of time on. Then ask for clarification. Ok rant over, sorry.

I agree. It was just a stupid mistake on my part. I did what you said and found some trails that some friends and I may explore this weekend. I'm still a novice with a stock truck so I don't want to be getting myself stuck in places I know I'm not ready for. Thanks for the input though.
