I've actually had my eye on the new Hydraulic Surge Impact Drill since before they released it, but recently misplaced my cordless driver drill and saw this combo kit. Hadn't pulled the trigger on it cus it was over $400 but HD is having a nice instant savings promo on it now till May 5th. Sweet ass deal!

Beware of Home Depot, big box stores like them often will order their tools with cheaper parts (i.e. plastic gears opposed to alloy) which allows them to have a lower sticker price than the exact same model from another retailer. Theyre always tryin' to fool us.

Absolutely true as I had a beautiful Maytag Washer and Dryer I bought from them, and when it broke down the internal workings were a lot different than a real Maytag combo bought from a real carrier. The technician could not fix the parts that were broken as they weren't OEM Maytag products.

That's pretty shitty.. I never knew that. For what it's worth, they had this combo kit for the same price as all the other retailers out there when it came out. I guess they're just doing a promo on it right now.

Milwaukee (and other power tool companies for the matter) doesn't do direct sales, or have retail stores. They rely on their distributor stores to sell their products. So, how could one be sure they're getting an original manufactured item instead of this "knock-off", when the retailer is a certified dealer?

That's a real good question, how would one go about getting some hard evidence?

    Calling all Milwaukee/Maytag/Rigid reps

Highly doubt Milwaukee is going to build a budget model that looks exactly the same, that would kill their reputation in a hurry.

Also happened to me with a John Deere weed trimmer. Wasn't even an actual John Deere trimmer, Home Cheapo bought the name. It was made by Homelife, find that out when it needed service and I brought it to my local John Deere business. They laughed at me and said that's not even our product, out trimmers are all yellow not green. Just more Hone Cheapo garbage

Well, I hate to see this turn into a Home Depot bash thread but I also hate to see them do this to their customers. Makes me wonder about the Honda Mower and Echo Weed Trimmer I got from them last season.

If the part numbers match this shouldn't be a problem for this deal. I have never seen special HD versions of Milwaukee tools or kits. Especially new product like the Surge, it is unlikely Mil would go through the hassle to make multiple versions on this. Maybe on the base model older gen stuff...

    I love my Surge!!

I was thinking the same, but it's good to hear the same thought from someone else. I can't imagine Milwaukee doing that, especially with keeping the same model numbers.

I've seen similar things at Costco/Sams Club where they sell a cheaper TV that's exactly the same (to the naked eye) as it's more expensive partner at, say, Best Buy. The only difference is maybe one letter or number difference at the end of the model number. They're built the same and by the same company (retains manufacture warranty) but they dumb down or leave out a feature on the Sams Club/Costco version to make it just a little cheaper. The general, non-educated public wouldn't know a difference b/c they display it as the same as the more expensive version at other stores. Even with some semi-educated people that look up or compare model numbers, you won't actually find what's "missing" or "dumbed down" unless you contact the manufacturer themselves. Which everyone knows, is a fickle bitch.

Another check would be to see if similar deals are offered at other retailers. I usually buy MIL stuff from CPO, Tool Barn, and Acme tools depending on who has the deal that works for me at the time.

FYI, check out this blog for good deals and reviews - http://toolguyd.com/

I guarantee you there are some inferior parts on those compared to one's offered at the Echo and Honda store.
