according to google the top 10 are 43K per year....

if i read the settlement correct, it's estimated to cost toyota 2.5MM or so to fix the frames...

This is actually untrue, Toyota Canada made a mistake in their writing of the recall and just like the USA recall once the campaign is expired (dec 31st for Canada) there is no more warranty coverage for the frames, regardless if you have had a undercoat done or not. I was as surprised at that answer as everyone else in Canada with an older Tacoma will be.

Interesting, as it states clearly in the letter, 15 years from in service date.

Hey y'all I got this in the mail recently, have any of you?
I was thinking of going through with it, but when I went on the website there's a spot for rembursment if you already did frame work, to get laid back, but no where to set up a date to get it inspected..
    How do I do it?

That is not right. People are still getting 1st gens done these days because it's 15 years from the in-service date.

I can confirm this as my truck is slated to go in next Monday, and the truck in right now is a 2001-2004 1st gen Tacoma at my local Toyota dealer getting a new frame.

My understanding however is this truck had to have fail inspection prior to dec. 31st, 2016.

When I discussed this with the service manager at local dealer this summer he explained this as 15 years from in service date as long as coating is done before Dec 31st 2016.

That's what I was told for 1st gens as well. So I suppose the 1gen currently getting a new frame at my local dealer must of had the crc done before dec. 31st.

My truck should be done next week, be glad to get it back!

Didn't 1st gens rust campaign expire years ago? Either way, probably the same coverage of 15 years from in service date after CRC application done before 1st gen campaign ended.

Not 100% on this, but I am 100% sure a rusty old first gen is getting its frame replaced at my local Toyota dealer, and I know the owner isn't paying for it. I know my 2005 didn't have the crc spray done to it and I'm still getting a new frame Monday/Tuesday.

Hi friends, apologies for the sluggish update.

I did indeed go in for an inspection. However, as I suspected, they thought they were looking at the seatbelt and leaf spring TSB. When I mentioned again that I wanted my frame looked at, they let me down by saying that the campaign is indeed closed right now.

I was frustrated that they scheduled me for a frame inspection despite the closure. However, I did have a good conversation with the guy.

I am perplexed as to why I never got any sort of notification in the mail. He checked out my frame and didn't seem overly concerned, and brought me out back to check out a couple frames that had been replaced already. There were three junked frames.

As mentioned before in this thread, he said they're looking for perforations; that they literally take a ball-pean hammer to hot spots, and if it punches through, it's eligible. I, however, am convinced that despite not having any perforations, my frame should be worthy of a replacement.

He said he suspects the case will be opened back up and to follow it. I just read a post that said there should be more info by April 25th. Does anyone know the latest?

    Thanks!
    Matt

Yep the notice in the mail is the proposed settlement that both parties accepted. Now the Judge has to approve the settlement before anything happens. The original frame replacement campaign was Toyota's own doing and was limited to snow belt states. The settlement will most likely be accepted, but I doubt you will see any action until this fall.

As a side note, my 2006 was part of the Snow Belt service campaign and the frame was replaced in 2015. It took 9 months to get a new frame, my frame had the hammer go right through and the truck was unsafe to drive. So I had a rental for 9 months. They did a shitty job and I ended up trading it in a few months later.

I have heard of people waiting a year or more. I would expect with this far more reaching settlement that people may have to wait a very long time to get frames, just based on the long times on the more limited campaign.

crawled under my truck yesterday and not surprised the rust got worse.

pretty good comparrison of where it was when I took it in during the limited campaign where it "passed" and where it is now ~1 yr later.

looking forward to this settlement happening.

info please. I have an 06 Tacoma. I had it in last aug for leaf spring recall. they said there was a frame inspection recall in march. I did not get a notice on that and I missed it. they said they could not do anything now. now my frame is perforated and will not pass inspection. anyone know if I am screwed or will it be covered under the new class action law suit that is waiting finalization.

Contact Toyota Corp and tell them you never received the recall. Then cross your fingers ....

It should be covered by the class action suit--if you want to get questions answered the best bet is to contact the settlement administrator via this webpage.

There is no point at contacting Toyota at this time as it is highly unlikely you will be able to contact anyone with any real knowledge of the lawsuit, and even is you did they will likely refuse to discuss an ongoing action...
