I have ordered a recovery bar with receiver from @Mobtown Offroad and plan on getting my winch soon. The winch will be mounted on a carrier so I can remove the winch when I am just driving as this is my DD.

I am looking at a really good price on a quality !2K winch and a pretty good price on a good quality 9K. One thought I have is get the best winch I can but is a 12K winch too much? I dont have any plans on actually stressing a 12K winch which is why I think it is the way to go.

Is it better to buy a larger capacity winch ( 7hp vs 5.5 hp motor, not just geared down) and never stress it which migh be better from a longevity standpoint or just get the 9K.

    Thanks in advance

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Get smittybilt with a lifetime no questions asked warranty and never look back. I got a 12K and can setup appropriately to pullout someone else with others factors applied. Slope, mud, snow, curb weight....

You should size the winch appropriate to your trucks weight. Bigger isn't necessarily better in the winch world. It can cause too much strain on your trucks chassis and do some real damage.

Most guys run 8000-10000 lb winches on their Tacoma. If you are in a situation where you need more winch power, use a pulley which essentially doubles your pull strength. Also remember, the longer your line is pulled the more strength the winch has. You lose strength with each full coil on the barrel of the winch.
