I am installing a jl audio he 900/5 and was wondering if I should run 1 or 2 10' tw3 with custom box in 2014 Tacoma. New to stereo installation

All about preference. I'd assume with the 5 channel amp you'd run the 2 subs as 1 speaker...assuming the other 4 channels are for your doors?

Just running a sub with a 5 channel amp would be interesting lol

For me, 1 10" Kicker 250watt w/ JL250.1 really thumps and fills up the cab.

Don't know much about the amp but if it were me(I like bass) I'd be installing two and see if the amp could manage to power them.

Might not be much of a difference since you'll split the power. 500W to one or 250W to 2. I'd expect a ~3 dB difference for much more effort and money. Or do a single SD3. I've never compared the 2 side by side (although I have heard both), but I've read about folks who have used both and the SD3 always wins if you can fit it - it's a little deeper. I can vouch for the SD3...have one in my truck - outstanding sub with excellent output as well as SQ.

Sadly, double the cone area with half the power will most likely result in much less of a gain. Id be shocked if its much more than 1 db louder.

    Audio, lots of it
It would be the same in volume as the single with double the power. Every time you double your cone area, you gain 3db. Every time you double your power, (if the speaker can handle it and does not reach its mechanical limit) you gain 3db. Those subs want 400rms each, so you will have some left on the table in capability, but it will sound cleaner with the 2 vs the single. And the tw3 is a great sub choice.

Yeah, there's that. Less cone movement will mean reduced distortion. Some (most?) don't like distortion-free or low distortion bass though. True story.

I'm well aware of how things work, but Real world results vs theoretic results are completely different but what do i know. In theory a 3 db gain is possible but in reality id say 1-1.5 db would be the gain attributed to this notion especially in our trucks in the setup that its in.

now lets complicate matters and toss in 2 sealed vs 1 ported keeping the same 500wrms power :)

Please continue... I am currently pondering whether I should switch up my current setup do to a problem with my current sub (link to thread). I am interested in your thoughts as I don't want to change up amp (HDP5), but I am tempted to switch to (2) 10s or (1) 12" preferably in a ported box.

I made my box and installed a 12 JL Tw3 and love it. If you have 2 subs like others have said you only increase your db by a few and for the money to me isn't practical but if your serious about some spl then go for it. Also having 1 allows for more storage. All food for thought

If you're only ever running a single 5 channel amp then my vote is for 1 sub. I did it in my old Ranger with a Kicker Kx800.5, the ancient model that literally went across the whole back wall. If...*IF*... you plan to run a 2nd amp at some point then I'd lay the groundwork & get the 2nd sub rolling. I just don't think the cost/benefit is in your favor with a single amp.

I have 2 10" I like it! 4 channel amp for the doors and a 2 channel for the subs. Suits my needs for definitely apperent and commanding bass, but not overpowering or distorted. I listen to everything from classic rock to pop to a bit of rap.

Also as a thought, has anyone tried or heard of having one ported and one sealed sub?
I had ported subs in my last vehicle and liked it, but also apriciate the tight sound sealed subs have.

    no don't port + sealed.
As for ported vs sealed sound... if you know what your doing you can make a ported box sound very close to a sealed box in relation to response but louder

Single will be more than enough... I run a single Morel Ultimo SC off a JL HD 900.5 and I can get it to bump as much as I want

I say 2 10-inchers. I am running 2 shallow Alpine SWR-T10 powered by the sub amp of 2 Alpine PDX- V9 enhanced by Audiocontrol Epicenter. I like the performance. Godspeed.
