I live on Long Island and unfortunately there aren't many fun places to go off-roading around here. I really want to take my Taco out on a camping trip and the spring but I'm not sure where I should go. Was thinking maybe the Catskills upstate...anyone have some suggestions? I enjoy hiking, fishing, biking, and just general site seeing and would like to do all of them on the trip.

If you don't have access to private property in NY, you aren't going to be able to legally offroad. There is a ton of camping in the Catskills and ADKs but you have to backpack in. Otherwise you will be sleeping at a trailhead and I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to do that either.

The best trip I took from LI (Besides moving to CO) was heading southwest to the Appalachian mountains around WV/VA and following them south all the way to GA. No maps or plans, just found dirt roads and trails and followed them as far south as I could. There is a lot of overlanding out that way. Besides that, Raushe Creek in PA has a lot of offroading and camping but I have never been there.

Good luck. Take a trip out to CO and UT. You won't regret it

How much time will you have and how far are you willing to travel?

I'm hoping to take about a week off for the trip, nothing crazy. Was hopping to go north to the catskills but everyone keeps telling me my truck wont see much dirt up there. I heard you can drive some trials to nice camping spots down in VA near Shenandoah so I'm thinking I might head that way. And I'd love to head west to CO/UT/CA/WA I just don't have the time right now so I'm trying to stay as close as I can.

Probably around a fifteen hour drive but there are lots of Forest Service roads with dispersed camping opportunities here in the NC mountains (Pisgah and Nantahala NFs) or we have the Outer Banks if you want Ocean. No beach camping on Cape Hatteras National Seashore but it is allowed on Cape Lookout NS. This is a write up on a trip we made a few years back http://www.augiesadventures.com/camping-on-portsmouth-island-day-1/#more-1449

And camp in the Park at Sage Creek if you don't mind the occasional bison wandering through the campground.IMG_4423_zpsabj2ht6w_b2e5a24d3cf4ab68d344b11cce3d9855459d3d35.jpg

sounds awesome fellas but Utah is a long drive from LI for only a couple days...hopefully in the not so distant future I'll be able to make it out there.
