I'm relatively new to California, never been off-roading here. I was looking to go to Big Bear this weekend, someone at work recommended Fawnskin to Holcomb Valley? Anything I need to know? Suggestions? Tips? Tricks? Does the trail go both ways? What's the best place to start? I assume I need chains on board to get up there?

    What a fun truck!
Headed up there myself tonight. I noticed that Caltrans requires that you carry chains in your truck (EVEN IF YOU HAVE A 4X4). I am betting that they will be checking also considering that it's dumping up there. Fawnskin has some really awesome sledding slopes and restaurants to hit up before you go off road. Also, my father in law told me that there were some solid trails to go on at Fawnskin, but be prepared for some rough brush and some scratches on your body if you're gonna go off road.

I live at the bottom of Waterman Canyon near Hwy 18 and can see both that highway and 330 . Right now I see a lot of emergency vehicles near the scenic overlook on the 18 and with this weather either a mudslide or accident

Just checked road conditions and its ugly on hwy 18 with almost 2 hr drive from my place to Big Bear lake , usually takes me 15 min to get to Arrowhead or 40 min to Big Bear . I would carry chains and drive very carefully up there as their is a Winter weather storm warning for the mtns

Here's a link to trails up there but I would contact either the Arrowhead district Ranger station or the one in Big Bear . with it being winter some trails are closed and with the winter weather storm warning and possible 10" of snow all trails are closed

    Arrowhead Ranger Station (909)337-2444

    Big Bear Ranger Station (909)794-1123

If I were you guys I would wait a week or so before heading up there . I'm seeing an inch per hr rainfall right now , flooded streets , debris / mud flows and snow fall expected under 3k ft by tonite . I've also had over 2" of total rain since midnite

The chance for mud/debris flows and rock slides is very high up there right now !!!

Thanks for the input everyone. Seems like it's not the best weekend to head up.

What about the Main Divide Road in OC?

I would just stay inside and keep warm , with this much rain per hr everywhere is going to be a nasty mud bog . Also if you get stuck or slide off the trail , its just not worth it

    What a fun truck!
Handled the drive up on Thursday night like a boss. We actually only used my truck for errands and stuff because we all knew it could handle anything. I was highly impressed with the 4x4, LSD, and ABS. Working all together, I have never felt safer in the snow.

Didn't end up making it to Big Bear, but I went up to Mammoth last weekend. On the way home I did a little off-roading off the 14. Looking forward to making it back out there.

Holcomb valley is where I normally wheel up in big bear but I know they have all the gates closed to the trail to prevent having to rescue people from freezing to death out there...
