They don't require crushing, just draining. And that requirement has been around for decades. European cars have been using cartridge filters for quite a while. Supposed to be easier but I never found that to be true.

Edit:. And the draining requirement is only for oil change businesses, not DYI'ers.

If I had a 3rd Gen Tacoma I wouldn't put up with this nonsense, just order a spin on adapter from this company and your good to go with standard style spin on filters.

Since you access this filter by essentially removing the "top" of it like a bottle lid, who decided that it would be best to the filter pointing upside down? Of all the places where a cartridge filter makes sense, topside would be ideal. :/

And its not like they didnt have the know-how... the FJ had a filter topside.

My Ex had a Cavalier that had a cartridge style filter but it was topside and simple to change.

...^^^... PS ... you need to order the special oil filter wrench to make it easy.

With the new aluminum oil filter cover and new style oil filter wrench (really grabs filter cover) ... changing old is fun again ... lol

For $199 I think I can put up changing the canister.

They are nice adapters but once you change the canister type out a couple times it gets easier. I do the wife's RAV4 every 5k and it takes only a couple extra minutes. The plus side of a canister filter is you can inspect every inch of the oil filter media.

This works great when draining oil out of the canister and only cost 20 cents from Lowes:

i just bought a 16 sr5 with 17k on it. nice clean truck. first order of business is to change the oil and filter. first off, oil very dirty. realize it is to be black indicating it is doing its job. however, i am convinced that the dealer who did any service on it did not change the filter. the 4 bolts holding the skid plat on were never touched. they are painted black and were not disturbed. having worked in 2 different dealers for 8 years, typical trick. i did hear that someone has a skid plat which has a hole in it so you can service the filter without removing the plate. anyone know who has this? i did buy the aluminum filter housing from Amazon and already had the filter wrench as our prius has a similar arrangement. the 4.0 in my 10 was a piece of cake.

The sell FilterMags for regular canister style filters but in the case of this style you would have to Epoxy a magnet or magnets to it.
