Hello all, newbie here. Quick question. I have a 1997 Tacoma 4x4 with a five speed. It only has 168k on it, but I'm told the head is cracked. I am working on verifying that, but my question is I have found a 2001 4cly being parted out and the engine only has 44k on it. Can I use it in my 1997? I know that I have two coil packs vs four coils on the 2004. Can I just swap engines? What's the difference? Thanks.

I don't see why you couldn't swap engines

Seems to me, that your '97 ECM wouldn't recognize the extra 2 coils to fire.
There might be additional differences in the smog controls and fuel delivery.

Agreed, but if I am using all my electronics, vacuum lines, etc, and just basically using the block and head from the 2001, shouldn't they be the same? Or at least close enough?
