The 3rd gen dampener is built into the hinge, so there is no need for a strut dampener. It would simply replace one of the hinges on the tailgate.

I know other manufacturers have the same setup. I might have do some poking around on the other truck parts and see if they can be adapted to our Tacomas

Not sure why anyone would go to the trouble with a 10lb tailgate. It is unnecessary stuff like this that is adding up to push trucks out of the affordability range for a lot of folks.

I can see why, every time you open the tailgate and it "drops" even when you don't mean to, the life of those cables shorten. Plus when the cables are pinched up inside and the rubber coating goes then the cable starts to rust, exacerbating the previous problem mentioned.

I would like it because I always have my hands full with tool bags and drills. As soon as I open the tailgate it drops straight down and slams.

When you add a reinforcement plate to the gate, even an aluminum one, it starts getting heavier and will slam down, which can be a pain if you are working one-handed.

I guess I never have had those problems. I could see having the damper if you like to just unlatch and drop. I just lower with my hand.

I wouldn't mind having something just to keep it from falling on my kids, should they ever open the latch (5 and 7 year olds). I'm always afraid they'll lift the latch, and it'll fall on them.

If you're mechanically inclined, go full custom. You don't need the tailgate reinforcement to make it work, see the rivnuts below that are installed in the factory sheet metal.

Installed back in October. F***ing love it!

Thanks. I thought there was a specific one that would work with the early gen that doesn't rub the cable. I read they all rub the cable tho

Theres a fair here in western mass every year which lasts two weeks. A few years ago i happen to be searching for a new truck, looking at the mid size market. They had a large chevy area, probably a sponsor, where you could sit in the cars etc. I sat in a colorado, which was actually pretty nice at the time. Anywho, to the point. To show off their tailgate assist feature, they had a mock up tacoma tailgate which they just let drop and bang. This must have been done thousands of times as i was there towards the end of the two weeks, and cables looked fine. Point is, it can take some abuse. Yes, im sure there are outliers

So i replaced the latch cable with about a foot long 1/8" coated cable rated @ 1700# breaking strength and some hardware from home depot. Its been on for 2 months, so far its been holding even when my skinny wife and my fat axx sitting on the tail gate.
