    Hey all,

I'll be making a trip to Moab later this week from Alabama. I've got a friend flying into Salt Lake City to join me, so I'll be dropping him off in Salt Lake City and then starting my drive back to Alabama after we spend a week in Moab. My route options are I-80 across Southern Wyoming and Nebraska, I-70 across Colorado and Kansas, or I-40 across New Mexico and Texas.

I-70 will be my route in so I'd like to take a different route back, but it depends on the weather too, I'd prefer to camp, but if it's too cold we can find a motel or something. I've never been to Wyoming or Nebraska, but have been to New Mexico and Texas. Is there anything to see along I-80 in Wyoming? Is it pretty or anything like that? I'm figuring Nebraska will be just as boring as Kansas...

Here's a pic of my rig for your troubles!

I figured it's best to ask the people who live in that area. Thanks for any input!

I lived in SE Wyoming up until 2011. In all honesty the pretty part of Wyoming is north of I-80. You could take some of the smaller state highways that loop out away from 80 and see some things that would be a bit different. I-80 across Nebraska, if your alignment is good you can sleep for a couple hundred miles........ but at least it's better than 70 across Kansas. Coming back from OKC to Wyoming I went across OK, and TX to hit I-25 in NM just to avoid Kansas again.

Back tracking to 70 or 40 is a long way out of the way. If time isn't a big concern, think about working your way up the west side of WY then across through Sheridan and taking 90 over to Gillette then down through the Black Hills into SD. That would be a good way to see Wyoming, and would only add a couple days to the trip.

That's kinda what I thought... Unfortunately I don't think we'll have enough time to make too big of a detour like that, even as much as I would like to see Northern Wyoming. We're leaving Salt Lake City Friday afternoon/evening and need to be back in Alabama Sunday night. Going back towards I-70 would add 1-2 hours to the trip and like 50 miles, going to I-40 would add 3 hours or so and 70 miles.

I am also debating going from Salt Lake City towards Rapid City and then across South Dakota, passing through the Black Hills area just briefly and then through the Badlands area also. Then continuing across South Dakota on I-90. I'm not sure if driving across South Dakota is much different than driving across Nebraska though or worth the extra 5 hours and 200 miles or so... Any thoughts on this?

Once you get east of Rapid City it's like Kansas. Considering the time line you need to run, I'd take 80 to Cheyenne, I-25 to Denver, and pick up 70 there. Or take 80 to Lincoln, the Nebraska 2 across to 29 in MO and south to 70. If the weather shuts down 80 across WY, which it has the potential to even this late in the spring, then use 40. 70 in western CO would likely be a problem if 80 is.

A few years back I did D.C. to Wyoming by way of TN in 32 hours solo that included a quick 2 hour nap somewhere in MO.

Hmmm. I'll be keeping an eye on the weather for sure, if it looks like it'll be sloppy anywhere I'm gonna avoid it at all costs. That's quite a trip! We'll have two full days and get a head start on Friday evening so it shouldn't be nearly that insane.
