Necessary Maintenance at 30K?

I'm at 33,000 miles on my 2016 and just brought it in for an oil change/tire rotation this morning. The service adviser tried to upsell me various services -- 4x4 service, fuel injector service, etc... I declined all today, but will get anything necessary completed the next time I'm in. He also mentioned they recommend rebalancing my tires every 10K miles, and a new alignment every 15K miles. That seems excessive -- I normally balance and align when I get new tires and not at other intervals.

What are the services I REALLY should get done and at what intervals?

 

Sounds like you need a new service department to me.....

 

I would refer to my owners manual for this, you should check it out....its probably in your glove box under the heading....scheduled maintenance.

 

I worked at a Toyota dealership as a lube technician. They tell you all those things because they are required to by management. Only thing he said that sounds weird was rebalancing the tires every 10K miles, and a new alignment every 15K miles. You don't need to rebalance tires unless issues are arising. Same with an alignment. Only reason to get one if your car doesn't drive straight or uneven wear on the tires. The rest of the maintenance I would do if you plan on keeping the truck till it blows up 250k+ miles down the road.

It was a particularly weird request when the guy had just complimented me on my stock tires holding up so well and wearing so evenly...

 

I changed out my:

M/T fluid *
front and rear Diff fluid (front was black) *
lube * and oil and filter
top off fluids
rotate tires

* Did these myself all at 15K miles. The others at 20K and will do all again at 30K but all myself. Overkill yes... but drive truck and wheel some .... good to get under work on it and take a look see for rust and whatnot.

No alignment no tire balancing... that a bunch of hooey, did they offer to change our tail light lube too? sheesh.

 

I rotate my tires every 5K and balance at 10K

 

Every 50-60k is typical for most vehicles, not sure what they "recommend" for the new motor on tacoma.

 

Plugs are easy tho, i do mine every 50000km roughly 32000miles. But will be fine for longer.

 

I dont have the manual in front of me but I think I remember reading 60K for plugs....

 

My question is this, for anyone doing plugs why would you get oem replacements (denso) instead of iridium or platinum plugs? For a minimal differance in price?

Whats wrong with Denso?? I think my Honda has 100K on them still going strong too..

 

Nothing but there nothing special either, plain jane copper tops... its all about that ngk!!

 

Platinums or iridiums have a faster spark, better detonation etc.

 

OK I was confused cause the Denso also comes with Iridium versions and what I used in the past.

 

I've been changing my own engine, transmission, and diff fluids every 30k (engine every 7,500) myself since I bought my G2. I also changed everything after break-in at 5k. You'd be amazed how much metallic shavings & bits are stuck to your diff drain plug after break in. Engine and cabin air filters are simple too.

Throw a bottle of fuel system cleaner in every 10 tanks or so to cover that.

I've never had an alignment done. Never had my tires re-balanced. Got around 60k on my original tires, Michelin replacements now have 90k on them and still have lot's of life (my truck has an easy highway life; still on original brakes after 155k).

Half the reason I love my truck is that a dumb-ass like myself with zero mechanical skills can easily do all this stuff myself. I'd love to know what the dealer charges for all these services, and how much I've saved over the years. I did bring it in to the dealer one time, to replace a wheel bearing that bit the dust, and had them replace plugs, flush coolant, and new belt. To this day I feel like a robbery victim from that visit.
