Help wiring ARB CKMA 12 compressor to CH4x4 switch

Hey everyone. I have purchased an installed my ARB CKMA 12 air compressor but the switch that came with the compressor is a 5 pin switch that doesn't fit the factor blank. I purchased the CH4x4 switch to replace the arb switch. I think I have the wiring figured out correctly but would someone look it over before I make the swap. Thanks in advance.

I will wire the to ignition wire (red yellow) to a fuse tap to the cigarette outl et so the compressor has power when the truck is on. I will wire the to dash illumination wire to the tail light fuse so the switch is illuminated when the tail lights and consequently the dash is illuminated.

 

Sounds like you should be good to go.

Only thing I'd maybe change up is if you want the switch to dim with the rest of your interior lights then you'd need to tap into a switch that is on the dimmer circuit instead of the tail light circuit.

 

I have just installed the same compressor, but have not began wiring it yet. Where did you go through the firewall?

 

Places to route wiring in through firewall?

I used fuse taps

For the dash lights i tapped into the tail light fuse marked "tail" so its only powered when the tail lights and consequently the internal dash lights are illuminated

For the power i tapped into the fuse for the cigarette lighter (Poutlet2).




Hope this helps. The fuse box is right under the dash above the brake pedal.

I guess that's one way to do it. This method the light in the switch will be on at full brightness and not dimmable.

 

Would there be a way to get the switch to dim?

 

You can tap into the dash illumination wire on the bed lights switch. I keep my dash lights on full power all the time anways so dimming wasn't an issue for me.

ARB CKMA12 up. I just bought some fuse taps and wanted to see if there's a fuse in the main fuse box (engine bay) that would be good for the red/yellow wire.

 

Hey @Sandman614, Do the two black wires for the ARB switch both get wired to the one black wire from the Toyota (CH4X4) switch? Sorry to bother you, but you seem like you know what you're doing when it comes to wiring.

 

Yep, if you trace all the blacks they are all tied together.

Having just finished installing the ARB CKMA 12V compressor into my 2017 Tacoma, in addition to the excellent advice above, I have some tips to save you trips to the store for incompatible stuff and walking to and from your house and garage a few extra times.

1) Note that the dash switch included with the ARB compressor WILL NOT FIT in the dash of a 2017 Tacoma. Just get one from CH4x4 like everybody else.
2) You will need to have butt splices on hand to tie in the CH4x4 switch. The double black wires to single black wire may need a reducer butt splice if your butt splices are really tiny.
3) Preorder some PET braided wiring harness sleeving and spend some time prepping that in your living room. You'll thank yourself later because it just looks nicer.
4) Get a pile of black cable ties handy so you can cinch everything into place later.
5) Figure out how your compressor is going into your engine bay on the Slee Offroad bracket and then bolt the compressor onto the bracket BEFORE you put the bracket in.
6) Sacrifice one coat hanger to be your hole poker and fish tape for getting through the firewall wiring gasket. Lube the front end of your wire pull and it goes through like butter.
7) There is just enough wire on the ARB harness to wire to battery from the Slee Offroad bracket unless you do a really weird run. Test fit it first before cable ties.
8) Buy two fuse taps, three 15 amp fuses, one 7.5 amp fuse. Note that Toyota has put low profile fuses in the fuse box in the cab and they do not fit back into a fuse tap unless you managed to find a low profile fuse tap. If you got tall fuse taps, then get 4 tall fuses. If you found a low profile fuse tap, then you only need two 15 amp fuses for your fuse taps because you can reuse the stock ones.
9) Get everything dialed in the engine bay but leave unconnected from the battery and ground for now.
10) Prewire your new CH4x4 switch block onto the ARB harness with whatever splices you are using. This is way more fun at a workbench than lying on your back with your doorsill in your spine. There is a good diagram on it at the start of this thread.
11) Get a headlamp for working under the dash. Remove floormat, remove thumbscrew on side panel to left of brake pedal, pop up the front of the door sill by hand, pop out the 2 clips on the side panel.
12) Tiny flat screwdriver to pop the clip on the goofy fuse box lid Toyota came up with. We don't need autonomous vehicles, just a simple, user-friendly fuse box lid will do. And Toyota can feel free to include a table in the future manuals that actually explains what things are connected to what fuses. Having just replaced my 2002 Taco with a 2017 I can't believe how hard the vehicle manufacturers are trying to make it impossible to work on your own vehicle. Grit your teeth and move on.
13) Pull the POUTLET2 fuse. Both are 15 amp fuses so it is impossible to screw up. Plug it in.
14) Pull the IG NO.1 fuse. Put the 7.5 amp fuse closest to the fuse box. Add the new 15 amp fuse furthest from the fuse box. Plug it in.
15) Pull the green CH4x4 switch block up through your dash switch location, plug it into the switch, and push the switch into the dash until it clips into place.
16) Connect your two black wires to the battery ground in the engine bay.
17) Connect your red wire to the red battery terminal bolt.
18) At this point you are ready for a test run. If it's all good, finalize your cable ties and put the cosmetics back together and clean up your tools.

 

Just picked up my ARB Twin, and have a question about using the CH4X4 switch. The ARB is supposedly a 15 amp switch, but the CH4X4 is only rated for 3 and says it should be wired through a relay. From what I can tell (and I'm not genius when it comes to electrical.....or most anything else) the ARB doesn't utilize a relay. Can anyone shed some light, so to speak, on this situation? Thanx a ton!

 

Alan - I have no issues with the setup in my earlier post with an ARB single. I did not buy a separate relay and add it in.
