Are you asking if toppers from say a Ford Ranger would also fit a Tacoma?

I know a GM S-15 has the same box size as my 1st gen x-cab.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
I would find it unlikely that other caps would fit a Tacoma being that 99% of the ones I've seen on a Tacoma were skirted. The skirting in my mind would make it brand specific. I think the unskirted caps look horrible with the bed caps hanging out.

You'd probably be more likely to find an aluminum "contractor" style one that would fit than a fiberglass one. The aluminum ones are flat on the bottom and sit on the bedrails. The fiberglass ones tend to curl over the edge of the bed rails for a more finished look. Long story short, I'd just search Craigslist regularly for a Tacoma topper. You'll find one eventually. I've had 2 for mine that I got for $200 each. I got a white one to start that I was going to have painted, then found a black one for $200. Sold the white for $250 so really only spent $150 for what I needed. Be patient and be ready to move when one pops up. And ignore the guys who say "I spent $2700 on it new and want $1800." Or search for used Tacomas that have a topper you want and ask the seller if they'll sell it seperately. Private sellers think it adds to the value. Most dealerships don't want them and are willing to take them off.
