Not a bad plan. If you are having early problems, an extended warranty might be a good bet.

I have never purchase an extended warranty on anything and have never regretted it. I purchase my Toyotas from a friend that is the fleet manager. When I go in to do the paperwork, they never even ask. I am guessing he tells them not to play that game. In and out..

Yep, now he has a new Tacoma with a FULL EXTENDED warranty. He's not going down that street again
with the chance of electoral problems that even Toyota can't fix. Electrical problems are the worst

    Extended Toyota warranty: No
Aftermarket Warranty: Hell No! (Not Just the Scams: All Extended Auto Warranties Are a Bad Deal ...) (American Greed: The Extended Car Warranty Scam - Vehicle ...)

    my $0.02:
    - None of these companies are a charity. They play the odds. I do the same thing. I don't by them for ANYTHING, especially the big ticket items (Can be the hardest to resist). At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure all my repairs for all my warranty eligible stuff is less than if I had purchased the extended warranty.
    - Set aside a few bucks and keep a zero balance credit card on file to smooth out any bumps in the road.
    - Warranties are huge profit for the dealers. I use them sway negotiations my way. Before you seal the deal, ask if an extended warranty is available. Let them believe it is something you would really like. Now lets say you negotiate down to a real fine point. Dealer finance guy is on the fence, but sales guy says "Joe says he is interested in a warranty. That would put the deal in our target range right?" (Of course once your in the hot seat do not buy).

Just do like a lot of us: by a 3rd gen and have it suck. Then Toyota will give you a free 8 year 125K platinum warranty.

It's a mixed bag, because now its harder to justify dumping it for something else. I also can't play around with different diff oils or additives to try and fix it (or I lose the warranty).

As someone who works with BMWs I really disagree. I've seen them just out of the warranty period getting their engines replaced on many occasions. Anything that goes wrong on a bimmer will cost you at least 3-4x what it would on a non-luxury vehicle. I considered picking up a clean 3 series for a really good price, and I'm glad I didn't.

The best option for a BMW is leasing.

If you have a $20k budget you can maybe afford a $10k luxury car.

I owned a Porsche outside of warranty.

That was fun. The first trip in for routine maintenance they found $17,000 worth of "maintenance" that it needed.

I totally understand.. I just recently bought a GT4 in October of last year.. the person I bought it from was also a good friend of mine and I was going to skip out in the warranty/maintenance package... but that was before the my friend told me how much the first "general maintenance service" can cost. So after hearing how much it can/will cost I decided it was wise to get the package lol

Thanks for all the info. Was able to whittle the dealer down to a price on warranty I was happy with. Last night after, laying in bed I thought that maybe it was stupid to do. And maybe I shouldn't have. But no use crying over spilt milk. Love the truck. Pretty excited.

I wasn't planning on buying the ext warranty but the salesperson was super desperate to sell it. I kept saying no because I legitimatly didn't want it. Finally made me an offer where if I had a radio knob fall off at 7 years 11 months it would pay for itself lol.

Nobody will offer you a $200 extended warranty, so that drags this discussion into a reality that does not exist. I'd guess the best deal anyone has made would fall around $1,200 for a Toyota marketed extended warranty. Some might consider that a good deal if they started at $1,800, but it's still a waste of money IMO. I do like finding agreement though - $4k would be nuts!

People are funny with this sort of thing. They base their financial decisions on emotions rather than logic. And the dealer sells them the same way; through fear and intimidation.

I don't know how many new cars I've bought over the years between my wife & me... 20? They make cars pretty damn good these days, and I cannot recall anything but a couple of minor repairs I've ever had to pay for. Even if I only paid $200 each time, I'd be out $4k. If I paid $1,200 each time, that would be $24k absolutely wasted.

Anyway, we all have our opinions, but I've yet to see a single authoritative argument in favor of paying for extended warranties, and my personal experiences bear this out as well. To each their own!
