My son and I will be heading to Big Bend from Waco leaving out on 3/11/17 or 3/12/17.still got some prep work to do and have been working too much overtime to get to it so departure date is dependent on that. We don't have a set in stone schedule of events for the trip and will be making a couple of stops along the way.

Day 1 planning on stopping off at the Enchanted Rock and then heading to Medina to camp on the river at a little spot I know of.

Day 2 we are going to point south west and hit it pretty hard to get to Panther Junction by mid day unless some of the dirt roads along the way call our names.

Day 3 back country trails and hiking.

Rest of the week pretty much the same as day 3.

If any one is headed that way or happens to come across us on the way feel free to stop by camp or tag along on the trail.

    Cheers,
    Red

Honestly haven't given the jamob much thought but I'll check the schedule and might try to make it. Hell I own property less than 20 minutes from Barnwell and haven't been to the park sense 2007... I think?? Depends on work and what the wife has going on.

Well we are home now had an absolutely great time. Rolled out from the house at noon Sunday and down to Llano, TX and pulled in to Coopers to grab some BBQ. My son's friend decided he wanted to roll with us while he was on the way home from his hitch in the oil field and he caught up to us there. Our first day kind of plans got thrown out the window when we passed the flashing lights at Enchanted Rock saying the park was closed. So we headed to Fredericksburg and pulled in and ate then said hell with it and headed West. But of course we had to stop off in Lukenbach for a cold Shiner.IMG_3072.jpg

    IMG_3073.jpg

We coasted into Fort Stockton on fumes the wind was blowing like crazy. 80 mph into a head wind 1000 lbs of gear and a rtt made for some great fuel mileage let me tell you.IMG_3097.jpg

We pulled up to the entrance at Permission Gap at 02:00 in the morning and just decided to rack out there till day light.IMG_3106.jpg

Day break we headed in and got all our permits and headed out to explore. Pretty much the entire day was spent on the trail. We ran the River, some of Glen springs road and Old Maverick road the first day. Broke for lunch in a box canyon we found along the way of river road. I cooked up some fajitas and the boys hiked and climbed up to the canyon crest. Finished River Road and proceeded on to Terlingua the first night by way of Old Maverick Road. Old Maverick was the most wash boaded Road we ran across shook the bolts out of my Hi-lift jack, loosened up my spare on the winch and the F-250 that was with us was coming apart by the end of it.

Ground fire was out side the park in Terlingua. Ground fires not allowed inside the National Park. You also need a special permit for charcoal.

Tuesday morning we loaded up and
headed back into the park headed out to our camp site at Roy's Peak down Old Ore Road. The northern section of old ore road was the most technical section of trail we encountered the hole trip. My Tacoma handled it just fine but the F-250 my son's friend was in had some issues. His 10" BDS lift limited his suspension travel so much that we were having to stack rocks to get him through some of the sections. I was not impressed to say the least. A lifted truck on 40" tires should have made a cakewalk out of all of these trails but we had to creep through just about everything because his rear suspension only had about 2" of travel. IMG_3216.jpg
We made camp and in rolls my buddy Dave. After camp set up we I cooked up my famous trail tacos and we set around BSing, the boys climbed Roy's Peak watched the sunset, told war stories and marveled at the star light. IMG_3209.jpg

    IMG_3189.jpg
Next morning I cooked up some bacon eggs and hash browns and some bad ass coffee. With our bellies full we broke camp and headed out for home. IMG_3215.jpg

This was a colossal trip even though we had some hitches it went great. Spending this kind of time with my son and making memories is what it is all about for me.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I did Big Bend last March with some buddies who were getting out of the Army. Spent4days and it sounds like we did the same loop. Day 1 for us was almost entirely spent on Black Gap Road, followed by the mining roads and then the River road to our first camp. Spent 4 amazing days out there.

Nice. I have big bend on my to-do list .. one day. Is the national park more challenging than the state park?

    In a word... Yes.
Just the sheer magnitude of the place makes it a challenge.

That trip looked awesome, I'm planning a trip either solo or with a friend later this year. But that just looks like fun.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
State Park is more challenging. The trails out there are less traveled, so you may have to lay some fresh track. You'll also have to be more prepared in case of flats out there. There's also no public consumption of alcohol in the State Park.

Keep in mind the PUBLIC part.

If you keep it in a cup, and not belligerent and loud, you will be fine.
