First off, mpg in the 3rd gens is what it is. I'm fine with it, but given the opportunity and resources, a lower gear ratio would almost certainly benefit the highway mileage of our gas guzzling beasts.

Has anyone looked into this or actually had a different set of gears installed?

    Effects on city driving?

    Effects on off-road capability?

I'm not that savvy with the total ins and outs of gearing.
Any gear heads with proper knowledge chime in.

Lower gearing? You mean numerically lower?

Low gearing is higher number. Lower number gears would make no sense with this truck. 2300 RPM is 100mph in 6th from the factory. You'd never use 6th gear! Factory gearing is 3.909.

    No.

And even if it did, and you could stand the drivablity factor, work a spread sheet to figure the ROI on the parts/labor based on MPG improvement.

You can actually work it out with the tire calculator if you care to.

After adding oversized tires, the 4.88s gave me 3-4MPG gain over stock gearing. It also nearly eliminated the trans hunting for the right gear. Before the regear, but wth the 285/70s, it would shift 6->4 with anything over about 5% throttle, very annoying.

Right on. That trans hunting is what I'd like to alleviate.

My driving is pretty inconsistent so it's hard to say, but before regearing I'd see 10-13, now I rarely see under 15.
