About a year ago I installed a CAI and had to relocate the air pump. The rubber grommets that isolated the pump from the engine compartment were not reused and a new bracket was supplied by the CAI manufacturer K&N. Ever since, when starting the engine, the air pump is loud until it shuts down. I installed rubber washers on the bracket but that did not help. Anyone else have this problem and what did they do to remedy?

    Thanks!!

A fundamental design criteria for OEM engineers is called NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). It is a consideration even if it increases production costs. Aftermarket "performance" makers do not place as high an emphasis on NVH, especially if it increases costs.

Got any photos of the relocated air pump--maybe the good people here can offer some words of wisdom?

Below is a pic of the install. As you can see the air pump is crammed in the front of the engine compartment next to the washer reservoir. It is contacting the reservoir (at the seam) and that most likely makes it louder. I will move it so it does not contact the reservoir and that will probably lessen the noise.

We used to call those various things K&N makes "HAIs" (Hot Air Intakes). The stock intake is a true CAI (Cool Air) drawing air exclusively from the fender well, and is tuned to match the engine's intake flow dynamics as well.

I agree with your assessment/plan, isolating the air pump from contact with anything, as much as you, can will minimise the noise...

I may consider replacing it with the stock air intake. It does seem to add horsepower, but maybe it is the sound deceiving me...:)

The placebo effect of most aftermarket "CAI" kits is remarkably powerful, more often than not it's the most powerful thing about them...

1" Toytec body-lift, K&N filter, coolant by-pass, mesh cotton screen delete, TTBS, WeatherTech in channel visors, 2.5" Rancho full suspension kit, Oil Catch Can, Toyo 285/70 A/T-2's, 21.5" light bar in grill, blacked-out grill, de-badged entire truck; and again, more to come.....
This may or may not be an old post, but I just recently reinstalled the factory box, with a K&N factory like filter, but replaced the accordion style hood with a straight pipe mod in 3" diameter. Wrapped the tube with heat wrap, and stuck the opening of the tube through the fender air opening. It feels re-tuned and in sync more so than with the K&N cai. I'll run this for a while, but almost instantly noticed better mpg's.... I'll post a couple of pics if this post requests????
