I'm looking at buying a 2017 Tacoma. I like the look of the sport better, but I want the locking diff of the OR. Would it be cheaper to put a locking diff in the sport, or try and buy color matching flares, sport hood, and color match the front bumper?

I can't speak for 3rd gen but my factory locking diff on my 2nd gen sucks. Half the time it never engages.

I would say if you like the sport get that then go aftermarket for the locking diff.

I think it would be cheaper to buy the OR and trade your flares and hood for painted ones and a scooped hood.

Pop-n-lock tailgate. New radio knobs. Rear step.
The ride of the sport is a bit stiffer as well, so you might consider that. As always, if you don't need the truck bed, the 4Runner seems to be a better vehicle. Good luck.

Depends on use/build plans. Most people get the sport and spend the left over money on building the truck with better parts; gears lockers etc.

What all do you plan to do with this truck?

Will you even need the locking diff?

Will you be replacing the suspension to lift it, off road with it, etc?

You can buy fender flairs, grills, hood scoops, etc. Having lockers installed can cost several thousand dollars if you're paying a shop to do it for you.

I put gears and lockers front & rear on my SR5. Replaced all the factory suspension. So buying an Off-Road would have been pointless for me. And I could care less about the hood scoop so buying a Sport made no sense either.

What left over money? They pretty much cost the exact same if built with the same options.

Off road. Sport and OR are the same price on paper. This has been debated a lot on this forum. My locker works great and is backed by factory warranty. Everything else you want on a sport is just for looks. OR offers meaningful equipment...OR typically will have a higher resale due to CC and the locker

Off road for the locker if god forbid you do actually ever use it. Sport if you want the hood scoop. Same price either way. I personally like the wheels better on the OR, but that's just a style I personally prefer.

This topic has been beaten to death. The TRD OR is a much better value for the money. You get several things on the TRD OR that you would not get on the Sport that are not just cosmetic.

Pay for a shop to paint the fenders and buy a hood scoop would be much cheaper than trying to pay for Crawl Control, MTS, and Diff Locker. Not to mention the TRD OR suspension is much better than the Sport.

    Like, so many.
I've had two trucks before this one, both 2WD and in the 8 years I had them I only needed 4WD probably 4 times and only 2 of those did I actually need assistance. I do Camp and backpack and sometimes I need a little more capability to get to those places. So When I was looking for a new truck I knew I wanted 4WD but I definitely don't need all the goodies in the OR. I've never really off roaded and I liked the looks of the Sport. I wasn't expecting to get a TRD, but I found one I liked and it was in my price range so I jumped on it. I love my Sport. I've done a few cosmetic mods and I get tons of compliments. I have no regrets at all.
Just honestly assess your needs and purchase something that you can afford and that meets as many of those needs as possible.

I'm still pondering a '17 in the coming months. If they would offer manual trans in the Access cab, then it would be a done deal. Maybe if I wait a bit longer they will come around.

Crawl control on the other hand is an interesting feature, but hasn't been "needed" for 1000's of other trucks over the years.

Crawl Control is not in the manuals, but we still get ATRAC, l wish the OR came in AC form too.

Better to have a locker and not need it then need a locker and not have it, that hood scoop does jack shit whether you have it or not

I'm hoping to make a trip with it out to the Moab, and maybe to Dead horse with a friend who plans on doing the trip in his Raptor. The Tacoma would be my daily driver, but I also plan on taking it camping, and off-roading on my time off from work.

I plan on replacing the shocks with the OME BP-51 or fox shocks to have a good suspension and 3" lift, also I want to put a winch in the bumper.
