Has anyone tried boring their throttle body? Everywhere I read about this mod, people claim the hp/tq gain (if any) is minimal, but they get considerable low end throttle response.

That seat of the pants fix would solve a lot of 3rd gen complaints, am I right?

My understanding is that the slow response a lot of people complain about is actually the ECU "filtering" the throttle signal from your foot.
It's a throttle by wire truck in both 4 and 6 cylinder varieties, and because of our benevolent EPA overlords most cars on the road nowadays employ some sort of signal filtering to smooth out driver inputs.

So a better solution would be a cable throttle conversion.

A better resolution would be a reprogramming of the computer controlled throttle.

Pedal Commander fixed this issue for me, at least until the ecu is cracked and we get a proper tune. i hated driving the truck before due to weak throttle response on the low end. i actually love driving my truck now.

This looks like it's right up my alley. I was moaning about the crap throttle response here and people were acting like they had no idea what I was talking about. I would like to dial in something between the ECT and non-ECT response.

URD also offers a throttle body adapter for a tundra TB on Tacoma's. I haven't seen any comments on to whether it helps or not though

TB won't fix it. It's all in the computers. I'm temped to try the pedal commander.. but would love for someone to come out with an ECU tune!!

Yeah, moreso than a cable, plus it would be way simpler of a solution.

I tend to gravitate towards the analog solution though. Less programming. :p

I haven't specifically looked into the pedal commander for the taco, but what frustrates me with such units in general is they're a sort of band-aid that fools the stock ECU throttle programming with signal gain.

You're not applying 33% throttle to get a 33% throttle opening straight from the ECU, you're applying 33% throttle and the commander applies 45% (or whatever) to the pedal signal in an attempt to get the ECU to pull 33% throttle body opening, so you basically boost the signal and hope that the ECU sorts it out on the backend. This means that eventually somewhere you're going to saturate the signal to 100% WOT and any pedal modulation past there is dead zone. Not to mention the ECU is probably self-monitoring the pedal potentiometer signal to try to "learn" its signal profile. It'll eventually "learn" that there is gain and tune some of it out.

i totally hear you on this, and band aid approaches are never my thing. but a non band aid approach in this case is a full ecu tune and that's not possible so blah blah blah, consider trying a band aid approach and don't think about it so much. it's your motor, if you don't enjoy it then what you gonna do with it? in my experience mere complaints do nothing and we don't have a lot of options at this time.

Has anyone ever 'cracked a tune' on a first or 2nd gen? Not talking piggyback, talking core ECU.

Why, other than being hopeful, do you think it will happen on the more complex 3rd gen?

These aren't performance vehicles in EPA clothing. It seems quite unlikely that anyone would invest the hours of effort to make yhis happen, because of almost no hope of an ROI.

speaking for myself i never said i think it will happen. i think it's a possibility, kind of like anything else. if i've taken the motor as far as it will go then i'm actually happy with it now, with the pedal commander setup i have, and everything else. but a proper tune would be amazing. that's all i can say about it.
