I am having an issue with my 2.7 leaking oil around the filter of my '01 Taco. I have tried changing the oil/filter, tightening the filter and today I took the filter off and cleaned the o ring seat. So far, no luck in stopping it. Is it possible that the filter mount is cracked? Most all of the oil is on the filter body or directly below where it has dripped. I am using Toyota filters. Looking for any advice as to what to check or how to troubleshoot. Thanks in advance

How did the rubber gasket look on the filter? How about the base that the gasket seals against on the engine? Clean and no nicks, right?

The o ring looked good. I cleaned the o ring seat really good and didn't see any issues but it isn't exactly in the easiest place to see. Seemed ok when I felt for trash/ buildup. This is the second filter to leak.

This is weird man. Any chance you can get a pic of the filter back on after oil is cleaned up, so we can see where the drip is from? Is the drip coming off the filter body? Have you cleaned it and then started it up to see exactly where the oil is starting from?

It is not running down the filter, more of a slow drip.

It appears to be toward the rear of the truck( on the left side when looking at the filter. Not much oil on the block, just down the filter. I will try to get s pic this afternoon

I finally wrenched the filter a little extra and it seems to have stopped. This has not happened before. I wonder what the chances are that the filter mount could have been damaged or scratched somehow. Either way, it seems to be corrected for the time being. Thanks for your help and input

I assume you know the mount has a O-ring seal inside the oil filter mount where it stabs into the block, that's where mine was leaking, I got both seals from Toyota for the mount,, if memory serves me right, it has a o-ring seal on the snout that plugs into the oil passage way inside the block and then a seal where it mounts directly to the block itself. This is all on the oil filter mount.

I don't think that was the source of my leak. Mine looked like it was coming from the top of the filter right where the o ring is on the filter. I wondered if the mount could be cracked close to that seal. I think it is stopped for now but I am sure it will be an issue when I change theoul again. Thanks for your suggestion though

If you want to check for cracks do a dye penetrant check. You can buy the materials to test from any NDT (non-destructive test) supplier online. This form of test will pick up any fine hairline fractures you cant see with the naked eye. Mine did the same thing and I did the same thing you did. I just tightened it up and it stopped. Im going to dye check my sealing surface next oil change.
