Hi I have a 2001 tacoma 4 cyl 2.4 li. I have a leak from the extension housing were the driveshaft connects to output shaft. I have replaced seal 3 times and I am 99% sure its play from the slip yoke/output shaft. There is a lot of play in all directions. Does any know how to replace the bearing and or bushing in the extension housing. My local home owners association does not like the transmission fluid stains.

I'm having the same issue with my 2005 6 cyl 4L. Been searching for two days now on the fix. I'm sure it's the tailshaft bearing.

    I'm assuming 2wd
    Standard Transmission?

And for now I would try to tie some tampons (oil soaker pads) or something under the leak to prevent driveway staining.

I've done them before. But you have to be very careful when removing them. Easy to damage extension housing. You'll need a bushing driver also. Harbor freight should have one. When removing the bushing (if I didn't have the correct driver) you need to get it to collapse in to the center. I'd use a good regular screwdriver and catch the edge of the bushing. Then knock it in and down towards the center. Once it starts to bend in towards the center it go's pretty easy. Or use a socket that catches the edges. A few videos on you tube shows how to do it. Installing: Make sure your aligning it straight in the housing. You can freeze bushing and heat housing up in stove to about 300 degrees . That will help it go in easier. But you have to be quick. Bushing will absorb heat pretty fast. Making it pointless to freeze it..

I didn't change mine because of a question of having tail shaft play. Do you recall having shaft play of 1/16" or so?

1/16 is a little excessive. Oil is not leaking out around the ujoint area is it? Just the seal.
