The only thing they were referring to is their own ignorance. It is an option any way you slice it....

Its definitely an add on option.
I had two ordered from to different dealers (still do but that's a different story)
One is a TRD OR DC 4x4 premium package, no tow.
One is a TRD OR DC 4x4 premium package w/ tow.
tow includes receiver hitch, sway bar, transmission cooler, engine oil cooler, power steering cooler , 130 amp alternator and brake light wire harness
    $650
I didnt want to add it because we have an f250 to tow stuff but I was able to get my taco faster with that option added. You never know when you might need it.

I was told all V6 must order tow package, no way to get around it. Trd , sr5, pro , sr . The order gets kicked back in the dealers system.

I believe all Canadian trucks come with the tow package. I do believe it is a regional thing.

Some of my local dealers order all their Tacomas with the tow package, but it is an option with every level of packages except Premium and tech w/JBL and options (which is the PT w/ JBL plus the tow package).

Ding Ding, we have a winner. It is regional. Is shows on the Maroney as optional, but is required in some regions and not required in other regions.

Let me clarify this is from gulf states Toyota. When I ordered my truck it was kicked back because I did not include the FP package which is premium tech with JBL. Gulf States Toyota representative had to be contacted to let the order through .

Exactly, you are missing much more than a receiver. You are missing:
    -Receiver
    -Trailer wiring harness
    -Transmission cooler
    -Oil cooler
    -Higher output alternator
    -Lower temperature fan clutch

The transmission cooler is a 2nd smaller radiator stacked in-front of your primary coolant radiator.

What ended up happening for you? The EXACT same thing happened to me on my '17 4x4 sport last week. Sales guy promised me all sports came standard with the tow package. Truck got delivered to the dealership the next day, I took possession and a few days later noticed no hitch. I figured it just didn't have the receiver but had everything else. I was wrong. Dealer was shocked today when I called him out on it. I'm trying to figure out how to handle this with the dealership now. I'm absolutely baffled a 4x4 wouldn't have tow.

    Any help is much appreciated!

You took delivery when it didn't have an option you were told was on it? Out of curiosity, why did you take the truck if this was missing? Or am I missing something?

Probably excitement of getting a new truck and inexperience with dealer incompetence causing him to take them at their word and not verify every option when taking delivery.

I imagine it's a shitty spot to find yourself in. No reason to pile on the guy and make it worse.

@sparker Immediately make note of all written communications and paperwork with the dealer to see if you have their claim about the tow package in writing. With that you're in a much better position to get it sorted out, and without that you're in a bit of a pickle. I'm unsure it's feasible to get and install the various parts upgrades involved and may mean a truck swap.

Also, IMHO the less you drive the truck before getting a sense of how the dealer will handle this the better. May not be an option, depends on your situation.

I flat out told the salesman that if the option for hooking up a brake controller didn't come with the truck I wasn't buying a Tacoma. It was the first and foremost feature I need in a truck along with the hitch, cooler etc. I made it clear my needs and actually pulled the kick panel to verify I had the connector for the trailer controller.

I would simply go back to the dealer and say this was one of my criteria and you said it came with it. It doesn't have it and therefore the WHOLE truck doesn't meet my needs. If they won't take it back or retrofit it be willing to take them to court. It will all hinge on how clear you were that you NEEDED the tow pkg.

I always read the features and options on the sticker tag before signing anything to be sure I'm getting what I paid for.
