so I live in Cali and figured a 4x4 is not needed, did I want one just to have sure, but the price was way out of my budget and the Mpg would be a lot, so my question is for being 2WD V6 can this bad boy still basic off road and do what most all the Tacoma's do? Mind you it is the SR5 V6 double cab, is not a TRD, i know it can handle most basic off roading but I wanna know what the community thinks lol.. My buddy has the same truck and he says he can go just about anywhere but he has ALL TERRAIN TIRES, and uses the auto LSD, just curious what you all have to say.. Cannot wait to take her out and really see!! :oldglory:

A lot of people will argue "my 2WD can go anywhere a 4WD can", truth is, there is a lot of it based on driver skill, truck setup, conditions, etc. Eventually a 2WD will be out performed by a 4WD.

But with that said, 2WD Tacoma's are very capable in their own right. It'd be even better if you had the Offroad with a locker but you'll still be fine on mild stuff. You just might have to take things with a bit more speed.

Get yourself a new set of tires and enjoy your truck. After you get stuck a few times look into adding a rear diff locker and go from there

I would say get a base model V6 4wd. they are not that expensive. But the 2wd is capable but there will be a time where you will say "fuck i wish i had 4wd" when you want to go someplace. yes you won't use it everyday, but it is those few times you wish you had it that will make you regret buying a 2wd.

Unless you have friends you can bum rides from or use their 4wd trucks. get a 4wd

well I already own my 2WD 2017 tacoma lol I love it, just curious on it's basic capability within off roading lol I know its a strong truck with the V6, i'm sure the way i attack wherever i'm going depends on it's outcome, I'm not gonna head to rock crawl lol

I would say get better tires. Go slightly oversized depending on the rim and maybe a small lift. It will help with the attack

I don't think the MPG would be too much different unless you added larger tires and a lift to the 4WD truck. bought a 2wd for the same reasons as you when I lived in san diego and less than 2 years later things happen and I was moved to an area where there was snow and ice and regretted not having one (plus going to the mountains whenever it snowed meant I had to chain up and that crap sucked).

that's true, I could have bought a 4x4 but they are very pricey lol I know a 2WD with LSD is very capable of handing a lot thrown at it, within limits, but when would I be placed in such conditions unless I put myself in that, lol being mostly it will see highway miles, and mostly offroad for fun I think i made the right choice, I just wanna know what's the most you can throw at it, it is a truck and i'm sure can handle ALOT at that.....

Only way to know what to throw at it is by just going to try things in it lol. Goes back to the whole driver skill, truck setup, and conditions thing. 2wds were following us around fine in Moab on the slick rock but it's like driving up asphalt. A pea gravel covered hill, not so much lol. Just use your best judgement.
