Oil Filter 2016 tacoma v6

Speaking for myself, the nice thing with a truck is there's no need for a ramp. Plenty roomy under my 2017 OR when I did my initial/early oil change. I suppose if you use a creeper you might need to raise it further, but I've never owned one and just slide underneath.

If you're asking who uses a torque wrench on the drain plug, I'd ask in return why you wouldn't do so (assuming you own one)? Sure it's easy to get it "close enough" by feel if you're experienced, but even after decades of doing this I prefer to take an extra two minutes and be sure.

 

Was curious would the crush washer give the torque wrench a false reading?

 

Never torqued a drain bolt in my life.... and never will. Waste of time.. Just tighten it to "feel"...LOL

 

It shouldnt, and since everything will probably have a little bit of oil, torque wrench should work better. That said, Ive found in the past the torque settings (on other toyota vehicles) felt much higher than what Im comfortable with using a steel bolt on a tapped aluminum part. I even choke up on the ratchet handle a bit to avoid stripping the pan. I understand the need for a spec, but havent felt the need to use it on oil changes.

 

Anyone know what that vertical metal tab thingy that hangs a little over the oil filter canister is for?

 

If it is what I think it is, its is a failsafe to put pressure on the canister just to make sure it cannot loosen.

 

I work with the guy from Baxter performance, they do have one for the 2016-2017 taco as he offered me one for my truck, very good quality stuff.

 

Is there still room under the skid plate for the adapter and a spin-on?

I spoke with him today, and he said that if you use a lower profile spin on filter, it would fit, but they reccommend to do the remote mount kit.

 

Some of this thread cracks me up. It never ceases to amaze me how millions of dollars and engineering time gets thrown out due to forum posts and Google searches. I see no reason to change the filter canister on your new Toyota to Aluminum. It is sealed by the O-Ring and NOT the threads or the pressure against the block. My 2015 Passat TDI is the same way. Never leaked a drop. Secondly, the Bed of your truck is made out of plastic. Arguably takes FAR more abuse than that canister. Are folks going to get a metal bed to replace the plastic one? Put the tin foil hats away fellas. I'll bet whoever on eBay that had these old Aluminum filter housing s was licking his chops to start selling them again and clear out his shop! Just enjoy your trucks. I am pretty sure there was no master plan to build a filter housing that is known to fail or leak.

I've not seen a need to buy one so I don't care one way or the other, just wouldn't want someone else reading your post to end up with wrong information.

amazes me how lazy people can be. Why would you NOT torque it for peace of mind? Takes barely any extra time and you know for sure you're not over torquing or under torquing. also, yes different crush washers have different crush rates, but if you get a Toyota filter, ask for one of their crush washers at the same time....Toyota's torque spec accounts for their washer's crush rate...

 

Lots of other brands that use/used spin on filters they shoved it so far up in there around a corner that oil rains on you with a spin on/off filter. Takes just as long to clean splattered oil off everything as it does to change filter and change oil . I like to wipe everything up so that any drips indicate a leak not oil that got sprayed all over everything because of where the filter is buried ;-).

its a canister filter, I know dodge uses them on their sixxers pretty common filter but silly design imo

 

Thanks for the Pics and the great info on location. I am out of free oil changes so time to get down to it. I had a Sunfire that the oil filter was on next to the fire wall and the oil would run down the block and onto the exhaust. talk about messy!

 

Some CNC milling machines I have worked with used "Velocite 2" oil in the spindles, when we get to that in automobiles it looks, feels, and smells a lot like Kerosene...
