There was nothing ranting about my initial post and yeah I typed spring instead of shock. Guess what, no one is perfect. Didn't do anything to the thread that wasn't already going on. Lesson fail.............

 

Ok, so you see a post where a member is offering up real and accurate information and instead of adding anything constructive to the conversation, or just moving on with your life, you make a smart ass comment about picking nits... and your reasoning is that other people did it first? I don't doubt that the lesson was wasted on you.





Thanks for the info op. I learned something. Don't know why some members felt the need to post sarcastic ass responses. Probably threatened their ego that somebody knew more than them about something.

 

I offered up that there are different references being thrown around in various places that muddy the definition of this thread topic. Post up all the weak ass name calling you want.

 

I love when people say they're going to "add a set of coilovers" to their Toyota. Then ask them what did they have already....

Some more nits to pick:

The nomenclature is correct. Nomenclature is the group of words used in a particular field. Struts, shocks, coilovers, control arm, travel, droop, and every word used to describe anything related to suspension are part of suspension nomenclature.

Verbiage is mostly correct. Me saying "metal formed into a helical shape" is bad verbiage. Me saying "spring" is good verbiage.

When nearly every vendor has them listed as Strut or Strut/Shock... they will continue to be called struts. No matter how much it makes you sad.

Well Jerry is wrong... that is why all the vendors call them struts. His entire logic that the "strut" is derived from the Macpherson strut is wrong. The strut design goes all the way back to the 20s. Macpherson's design is from the mid/late 40s.

The presence of upper control arms does not prove the Tacoma doesn't have struts... it's proof the Tacoma does not have MACPHERSON struts.

And the fact that "everyone is doing" something should not only be cause for pause to reflect... if everyone is doing it (including reputable vendors like Wheelers, Headstrong, as well as Summit and others) maybe I should re-think my logic. ALSO... when someone is looking for "shocks" because Jerry says that's what they are, and all they can find is struts, it is a cause of unnecessary confusion.

And at the end of the day... Is this really worth arguing about... and posting a sticky basically calling everyone who calls these things a strut a fucking dumbass?
