I have a 2006 Tacoma that has the dreaded peeling/rusting roof. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or tips for doing the repairs on my own. I have never painted any vehicles so it will be new to me. I'm guessing it will simply need to be sanded down and sprayed. I will do my best to post some pictures tomorrow.

the best way is to sand all the rust off. I will be doing mine soon. same problem. I will be sanding everything down to bare metal and applying a sealer. then prime several coats before applying 2 to 3 coats of a base color with color sanding and clear coating. its a lot of work but still cheaper than a paint and body shop.

    First a few questions:
    1. How handy are you?
    2. Do you have an air compressor? How many CFMs? Spray gun?
    3. Do you have a garage, barn, large shed, car port? Proper ventilation?
    4. Do you have the required respirator, coveralls, nitryl gloves?

Look up Kevin Tetz paintucation. There should be some videos that describe the basic process but the detail will be in the DVD.

    Basic steps would be:
Remove roof trim, sand to bare metal, remove as much rust as possible (wire brush, scotch-brite, etc...), treat metal, clean garage/barn/shed, spray epoxy primer, block sand, add filler for pin holes, spray epoxy primer over, block flat, high build primer, make spray booth with plastic, spray color coat, spray clear, color sand, compound, buff, reinstall trim.

Is it overly hard? No. Take your time, read, read, read. Follow the data sheets for the paint to a T. Pay special attention to the temperature and recoat times. Also, use a 2 part urethane paint from an automotive paint supplier. Ask the counter person for advice. They know their products (typically). A quality respirator is a must. The isocyanurates are not something to play with.

Edit: Being in California, you might not even be able to spray solvent based paint. Water based may be the only paint available, if anything at all

at the least, sand, then apply rust converter/reformer.

Heres a before and after of mine. I took it to get the roof and hood painted a few months back because it was starting to rust.
Cost was around 400 altogether if i remember correctly

Edited to add: turns out, it was december of '15 when i had it repainted. That made the truck 6yrs old when the clear was already peeling off the roof

What pisses me of is that all the peeling/rusted roofs all have the same pattern. Long uniform strips running down the length of the roof. It's like a step was missed from the factory or something. Whats funky too how there is an acute rusted zig-zag pattern that can be seen running down the length of the strips... Whats up with that?

Its almost like they didnt put the same amount of clear coat down on those certain areas on the roof as the rest of the areas. Its strange for sure. Its probably one of the only problems ive had with this truck so far

Me too! Black 2006 Tacoma. Thank God I hand washed it today instead of the drivethrough. I never look on the roof. Man I'm pissed. I've driven way older vehicles than this, one of them black, with never any paint issue. Just like the other posts, tiny scratches all over!!!!! What the hell????
So it sounds like this is best left to the pros. I don't have a paint booth or a sprayer or any of that stuff. What's the max I should expect to pay?

I personally paid only 400 for the hood and the roof to be repainted, but they only sanded it down and they did not chemical strip it. Its still good a couple years later, but with painting, the quality is all in the prep work so i wouldnt mind paying 600 (for hood and roof) or so to have them strip it down and repaint it with some type of included warranty. Either way, if you get it repainted youre much better off than having the thin metal on the roof to start rusting through and causing you problems

Yeah that's not good better to fix it now before it gets any worse and it starts eating through the metal.

Has anyone had any luck getting a dealership to pay for this problem?
And would a sufficient stop-gap be for me to take some sandpaper and sand the area well and then spray paint the area with black spray paint? Would that hold it until I can save the money to fix it?
