Locking hubs on rear of 99 Tacoma rwd

I have inherited a 1999 Toyota Tacoma rwd auto xmission. If possible I would like to install locking hubs to allow the vehicle to free wheel while towed behind our motor home. Drive shaft disconnects and tranny lube pumps do not seem as viable as simply disconnecting the rear axles. Any suggestions or feed back such as what axles are required for the conversion would be appreciated?

I've heard that serious Jeepers do this, for the same reason.
I assume they are using a full-floating Dana axle.

Just how far do you Tow this vehicle ??

If your wanting Locking Hubs I would think it is for very short distances and your doing quite often.

Which would make pulling the Drive Shaft a pain .

I never researched but by now I am sure some Chinese company might very well make a kit for what you need .

First your going to need a free floating rear axle .

With some custom made axles .

Then you need to decide just what brand of Hubs your going to use .

I know at one time Warn sold a kit for rear wheel hubs For the Jeep full floating axle still seems to be listed

If you can do all the install and axle swap yourself it might come in under $2000.00 if you need to pay labor it will be expensive .

If this is what you want it most likely can be done but not cheap

Going to go to Toyota and price out full floating axles, etc., if they have them. Will post results as well as photos of truck and project when finished.

 

A full floating axle is a complete axle assembly drum to durm

Not a axle shaft to slip in what you have now.

Can locking hubs be installed on "semi-floationg" axles? I'm thinking no.

 

You can convert your Toyota semi-float to a full float axle, and do a disc brake upgrade while you're at it.

You only need to source a few parts and it works with the axle housing you already have

My old M38A1 68 jeep had a full floater Dana 44 rear with Warn Gold Premium locking hubs . This made it easier to flat tow plus on the trail the hubs saved the axles from snapping . I also from time to time used drive flanges instead of locking hubs

I have never seen these kits nor bought anything from this vendor but if I had a need for rear locking hubs this is a great place to start.

Is your truck 2 or 4 wheel drive, if 2 wheel drive I would just unbolt the universal and tie it out of the way, if it's a 4 wheel drive then that presents a whole new set of problems.

 

magog45 HEHE thanks for the tip. Already knew about that one but @ 70 my days of climbing under a rig on a regular basis are long gone... Unless you want to come along and help me back up off the ground. I don't know, somewhere along the line my get up off the ground thing went away!

 

Not sure what you might be doing wrong it works just fine for me.
