If you know of a good reputable local dealer/installer start there. Let them help you make an educated decision to fit your needs. If you're stuck with Best Buy and Walmart, like many are, consider Crutchfield, Sonic, WoofersEtc, SSA, Amazon, Jet, Craigslist, etc for your gear and learn a little DIY.

Really hard to answer a question like "where's the best place to buy a sub and amp" though. Do you want the best price? Best service? Best selection? Best reviews? Best information? Best looking women on website? Does warranty count? etc...
