How would one know when their breather (the one you use in this mod. NOT the stock one) is clogged?

There is a world of other things more to worry about. That a spring loaded vent is on the rear differential instead of a real breather (like they do put on the front diff) would be a far bigger worry of clogging or allowing muddy water to suck into the diff (as happened to my new truck, and this the need for everyone to do this mod if they will ever off road into 18" deep water)!

Glad I did mine last week. Tide came in and had us forging about 18" of water to get back on asphalt. IMG_4681.jpg

I believe it's not needed. There is supposed to be a breather already from the factory in the engine bay.

I've never worked with any sort of tubing or fuel line before. Can someone give me a link to buy the tubing I would need online? I looked around but the clear plastic stuff, would it withstand the heat from rear diff? Not really sure what tubing I need. :notsure:

    Ahoy There TC World

How much of an issues is this. If your going low and slow through the pines does the diff get hot enough that a small water crossing will kill the diff or is this more for serious rock climbers and dune jumpers that are cooking their gears.

Sounds easy enough that I will do the mod, just wondering what are the odds of this happening.

It is so well documented on the first pages of this thread as to the reason why we do this mod, it is really beneficial for people to start there. In a nutshell: If you drop into a water crossing or bog down below the axle (which is about 15"), water could be drawn into the differential via the axle. Replacing the 'exhaust vent' (it's not a true breather from the factory) on the differential with an elevated 'true' breather on the end of a hose can prevent the vacuum created in the differential when hot (differential) and cold (water) objects connect. Toyota does this on the front differential. This mod duplicates the front differential breather installation on the back differential. IT ONLY MAKES SENSE.

    Thank you for the clarification.

I read the thread and understand the physics, I am a plumber by trade. This is a big problem in plumbing systems. I was wondering how often does this happen.

Is this a 100% of the time if underwater or more like a 10% of the time.

I am currently making a road through some property I have in Vermont and there are small streams that I have to cross.

    Not deep but damm cold.

Wondering if I already did damage.

Yes, I also work with water lines (irrigation) and a vacuum breaker prevents back siphonage. In the case of the rear diff oil getting contaminated, it happened to my truck the very first time it did a deep water (2 ft+) crossing when my truck was just 6 months old. The oil gets milky looking when it has water in it.
