Hey guys, new to Taco ownership. Just bought mine with 24k miles, and after startup, warm or cold, I hear a loud clanking noise from somewhere near the front middle or passenger side. It usually happens when I shift into drive and pull out of a parking space, mainly when I lightly apply brakes or if I'm just coasting. After a while of driving, it disappears but it seems like it is getting worse. Any ideas? I should add, it sounds like you are taking a heavy drumstick through an iron railing.

Check the dust covers on your front brakes. They might be bent in. If so, just grab them and bend them out.

Does the frequency increase with engine RPM?

Check the fan and shroud to see if they are hitting.

How's the serpentine belt look? Not changing with rpm has me stumped.

Does the noise happen when just sitting still with the engine running or only when moving the truck forward and or reverse?

I feel like I am playing 50 questions...

Sorry for being vague, car stuff just instantly turns me clueless. Here's my morning commute:

    1. Turn car on, no sound.
    2. Shift into R with foot on brake pedal, loud repetitive clank.
    3. Release brake, no sound.
    4. Brake back on while cutting the wheel to get out of the driveway, sound comes back.
    5. Shift into drive, sound comes back.
    6. Accelerate, sound is back for about 3 seconds, then disappears.
    7. Quarter mile later when coming to a stop with foot on brake, the sound comes back until stopped. Comes back while turning right and is gone when straightened up.

After that, it's gone until I start it up again. Usually it lasts about 3 or 4 minutes total and then stops.

Check the heat shields on your catalytic converter and exhaust system. They rust, loosen, rattle, and then eventually fall off. It is generally safe to remove them if you're not going to drive through tall grass or anything combustible.

Hey, man. I bought a used '05 pre-runner in Nov. of 2015 with 84,000 mi. I am at 104,000 mi now and am going to change the belt today. I have the same ticking noise I think that you are experiencing. Mine goes away when the truck is warmed though. I would describe it as a bad/noisy valve or lifter. I ain't no mechanic lets be clear. But, it is most prevalent at colder temps, gets faster and louder with higher rpms before it reaches optimum op temp. I would describe the noise as holding a card in a fan while it is spinning. Mine seems to be coming from the drivers side though. I guess I'll check all the heat shields/cat. converter as mentioned above but I certainly feel it is something inside of the block. I'll let you know what I find and if the belt change helps.
