I was laughing at the automotive question category too. They had to try and guess car models by the clue. One question was asking about a Honda model and he was like "SUBURBAN!"

It looks like I have three lines too instead of two. Unless that came from something else, I forget now haha. I think all those were a/c related though as I don't remember any other fluids coming out.

Y'all ready for snow on Friday!!?

Thanks to all who restarted their a/c, drained the gas from your snow blowers, washed your vehicles... Together we go far.

It'll all depend on when the moisture comes, and the temps when that happens, but 7k+ feet should be getting mostly snow, totals could be near a foot.

And next week, the models have been pulling for huge amounts for the past 10 days, so there could be a multiple foot dump coming next week.

Hello everyone,

It's a been wild ride through the computer models and ensembles today. I am waiting on the 6pm models to finish rending which won't be until 1 to 2am. I have seen enough though based on today's runs I have already analyzed and runs over the last 10 days. As I mentioned in my earlier post, there is really good consistency on the two storms headed our way. Even the snow amounts are not that far off. I have some major concerns about the temperatures below 7000 feet, but don't tell that to the computer models. They seem determined to bring snow bombs over a large swath of the state. Here is what I am going to talk about in this post:

* Minor disturbance on Tuesday
* Storm systems headed our way this week and next week

First off I'll briefly talk about the minor disturbance on Tuesday. A few showers could pop up along and east of the front range, and there could even be some snow shower activity in the foothills. I am not looking for a big precipitation-maker out of this system. This is just an appetizer to what is headed our way.

The first big storm is set to arrive Thursday night into Friday (liquid moisture model map uploaded for storm 1). There could be some moisture popping up during the day, but the main bands are not set to arrive until nightfall. The timing could change a bit so I'll be monitoring the timing closely. What I am seeing right now in that system is the potential for many areas to get 1 to 2 inches of liquid precipitation. Even the lesser totals are in the .75 to 1 inch range. This would be a welcome relief if we can get these totals across much of the state. I am feeling more and more confident, regarding getting this much needed rainfall. What I am not totally confident in is how much of the wet will turn to white. If this were a typical spring storm the rain to snow math would be as such: 1 inch of rain would equal 10 inches of snow. Depending on how cold the temps get, the rain/snow math can change accordingly. Without getting further into the math and information you all don't really need, I will tell you that the temps in this storm will be in the 10 to 1 ratio. For example, based on this model, Estes would be in the inch range and that would mean 10 inches of snow. Denver would receive 1.5 inches of rain or 15 inches of snow. Manitou would be in the 1.8 inch range so that would mean 18 inches. Places like the Palmer Divide would be over 20 inches of snow.

Now that math is all fine and good IF THE TEMPS COOPERATE. That is the conundrum with this storm. The GFS operational model, the ECMWF operational model and the ECMWF mean ensemble run all say much of the liquid you are seeing on this map will be more white than wet. I can tell you I feel pretty confident once you are above 7,000 feet and maybe down to around 6,500 feet which would include towns like Pinewood Springs and Manitou Springs. Places like Estes Park, Allenspark, Nederland and Woodland Park should see mostly snow if the moisture cooperates. For most areas below 7,000 feet, the bulk of this liquid will need to fall as snow Thursday night into early Friday morning because daytime temps are going to be in the upper 30's to mid 40's. That won't cut it if you are looking for a snow bomb. It's interesting that the above-mentioned models are adamant about the big snows, because even their daytime temps do not really warrant an all snow event once you are below 7000 feet. That said, it will not take much to turn an all rain event into an all snow event. We may only be talking about a few degrees. This storm system is so on the verge of bringing snow bombs flying across a large part of the state. Unfortunately if you are looking for snow, there is an equal or better chance that if you are below 7000 feet, you will be seeing mostly, if not all, rain.

I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's snow parade, but I have be realistic when it comes to the temps. Do I think there is still a chance this could be an all snow event along and east of the front range? Absolutely! It will just take some big time ingredients to come together. Now if you live above 7000 feet, believe it or not, you all could still see some rain, but the bulk of the moisture should be snow which means there is a chance for 10 plus inches in many of the foothill locations as long as the moisture does its part.

It looks like storm one should be playing itself out by Friday night at the latest. If the duration changes, I'll let you all know. That could also play a part as to whether or not a snow bomb will materialize in the lower elevations.

Storm number 2 looks to arrive by next Tuesday into Wednesday, although that timing could very well change since it's a week away. That storm could be a bit cooler, and is packing the potential for another big moisture outbreak. That storm could drop another 1 to 2 inches of liquid moisture with once again heavy snow a possibility in all areas, depending on the temps. I have seen some 16 day snow totals from the GFS model that would blow your mind. Estes Park, Allenspark, Nederland Woodland Park, the Palmer Divide area down to Manitou Springs would receive over 30 inches of snow IF THIS MODEL WERE TO VERIFY (16 day storm total). That's BIG IF right now. Many other areas would top 2 feet of snow (again a 2 storm total). The GFS models loves to boast big totals at times that don't pan out, but what has caught my eye is that this model has been talking about these totals for the last 10 days of runs. That surely has my attention because many areas that had flooding in the recent past could be seeing 16 day liquid totals in the 3 to 4 inch liquid range. That would include the same towns I just talked about. So yes we do need the moisture, but JUST NOT THE FLOODING TOTALS. My current town, Manitou, would be in this 4 inch liquid range so I will be monitoring Manitou as well as all the flood prone towns very closely.

Because storm 2 is so far away, the duration will be difficult to pinpoint at this time. I'll be working on that over the next few days, along with of course analyzing and monitoring storm 1 closely.

I will have more updates coming your way as I begin to go around the clock in the Weather Center over the next few days. If I can find some time over the next couple of days, I am hoping to do a live broadcast and answer all of your questions about the upcoming changes coming your way.
