What are you guys using for bedside safes? Our son is now very mobile (17 months) so the pistols no longer reside on the night stand at the ready. I currently have my 17 and 43 on a high shelf in our bedroom with an empty chamber and I don't like the setup at all. I'd prefer it be more accessible in the middle of the night and secure, with no way for him to access it. I've looked at several biometric and RFID containers but still feel uneasy about fine motor movements in a potentially high stress situation. Like anything training and repetition will alleviate error so I'm open to them. What do you guys run?

1st start educating your son on your guns & gun safety. Start early with getting the curiosity factory out of him & basic safety. I have a 2 & 4 yr old and both won't touch my guns without me. They know if I'm handling one they can come up to me and I'll go over it with them. They especially like hitting the bolt release and magazine release on my AR's.

I have two nephews though that my brother doesn't want them to know guns exist. Both are extremely curious and want to touch my gun when I'm carrying for work.
As for safe, I have a small combo safe in my nightstand. It's not the fastest, but it was free and works for my 19 and spare mag.

Education is paramount. I agree 100%, but for now he doesn't understand and showing him a firearm will only make him want to touch it. I would imagine that within the next year we will be able to begin teaching him not to play with them. I'm going to run over to Cabelas this weekend and see what they have on hand that I can mess around with and see how they function.

Please don't take it as I'm trying to argue, but I have found the opposite with my boys. Having them be around my firearms and letting them touch them (only in my presence) has made them less curious. The whole time talking about not walking in front of the muzzle etc.
But ultimately its your beliefs & comfort level so waiting another year is cool. At least you believe in educating your son, unlike my brother.

Any way a gun safe to look at is gun vault biometric speed vault. If I were to buy a safe that's what I'd get. That or some other gun vault biometric safe.

I'm basing it off the fact that with other items we show him (a laptop for instance) and tell him not to touch it or play with it.... and an hour later you hear him in the kitchen trying to grab it off the counter top. Unfortunately he was successful one day but it was my old laptop and it just knocked a button off. I think it is something that will be best taught when he can comprehend what I'm telling him and I can explain to him why not to touch them without me. Every child is different and every parent teaches their own way. The end result is firearms education.

Pretty cool except for, I could see someone blowing their significant others head off. Before they even sat up to get out of bed, to see what went bump in the night.

That's bc you'd use common sense, something a lot of people don't have these days.

Yeah but that's them, your still alive to kill some burrrrrrglars! For real though, it's crazy how it drops out like that. You'd have to be careful during "bedtime activities". Nothing ruins the moment like a 12 gauge shotgun falling onto your chicks head! I dunno... on second thought that's kinda hot.

I have a small-ish safe on my nightstand that has both a keypad and a thumb scanner. The thumb scanner is quick, maybe 1-2 seconds to read a print, tops. Since I don't have kids I can just leave the gun on the nightstand, but the safe is handy to lock the gun up when I'm not around. :notsure:

Got it at Cabela's, but I don't remember the model.

I'm going to go this evening maybe. I've seen several online like that but I'd like to see one in person and see how it works.

I don't have kids so my pistol is kept close to my bed.

If I had kids I'd definitely have a safe of some sort. One with a thumbprint or finger swipe style lock would be ideal. Then you could get into it very quickly if you had too. Like say, one of those Liberty ones Cabelas sells.

Pushbutton version of the gunvault multivault.

We also have a carbine safe in the bedroom if we have time to get at it. Main safe is too far away for HD use.

I mostly trust my 3 year old but he does the occasional boneheaded thing so .. no. Not yet, anyway. By 6 (and the other kiddo being 4), though...
