Does anybody have any experience replacing the engine in an 05 Kia Spectra? My buddy is deployed right now and left his car, which has a blown engine. The general plan is to tear down the engine and see if it's something simple, and go about pulling the engine from there. A local junkyard has whole engine assemblies for less than $300, so I may go about replacing the whole thing anyways. I've pulled a few engines before, but never from a fwd car. If anyone has some advice, tips, tricks or anything it would be greatly appreciated.

    OME and worth every penny.
    pull trans/engine together.
No matter what make, they're essentially the same. Lots of disconnecting plugs and pulling axles out, unbolt motor/trans. mounts and lift it out.

Some are easier coming out the bottom if you have a way to lift body.

    You determine what's wrong yet?

That shouldn't be too hard. Transaxle's aren't very big are they? I've already disconnected all the wiring connectors and whatnot. Haven't determined what's wrong, no. However, having pulled the valve cover, it smells absolutely terrible, like never changed oil. I'm fairly confident it threw a rod based on how it sounded beforehand. I haven't done much lately, one of my fender flares got semi jacked up so I took them off to paint black to match the bumper.
