We have a great concern at this point with our 2009 Toyota Tacoma Dbl cab, short bed, 4x4. Our Tacoma is used primarily to travel back and forth on highway and dirt roads to our camp at Long Lake each weak during spring, summer and fall months. We also use the vehicle to haul our boat, haul our small J.D. tractor on a tandem trailer and to hunt and fish. The vehicle only has about 56,600 miles on it but I have repeatedly been troubled by the truck’s frame with increasing evidence of deep rust and corrosion. I am now concerned the frame may actually break and since I haul trailers with the truck it could be disastrous to have a frame break during this type of service. The pickup might come apart and cause personal injuries, property damage or even death to us or people in oncoming vehicles if
this were to happen while we were hauling the boat or our tandem axle trailer it could be devastating on the highway. My VIN ends with 9233???
What can I do about this, I received two cards, should I contact dealer myself or should I wait till I get something from Toyota?

Take it to the dealership and tell them you want it checked on the recall.

Thanks, don't really know what else I can do? Will Toyota be notifying customers about going to the dealer? My dealer is not really close, being way up here in northern Maine.

I got a recall letter, of course AFTER I did this to my frame. I went under the truck and checked it personally since it's pretty easy to see if there are holes or thin spots using a small hammer.

You can always call the dealership and talk to them about it.

Quick question: is it ok to put the por-15 on the frame with no rust? I wanna do something to prevent the frame from rusting before it gets bad.
Or would you recommend something else to prevent the rust

If your frame is rust free, use fluid film to protect it. That's going to be much easier and more cost effective :)

I think using both fluid film on the frame and then a spray of rustcheck/krown is best. That eliminates the whole electrolysis while the fluid film keeps it covered

Mostly miscellaneous electronic mods.... -2 spare Electrical fuse blocks hard wired to the battery with a key on relay. -Hard Wired Radar detector over rearview mirror. -2 Dual Whelen Avenger blue LED emergency lights, one on each side of the rearview mirror. -EP911 Blue LED Light Bar & Traffic Advisor, Rear Windows. -4 corner amber strobes in stock lights. -Hardwired RF Scanner with external speaker under center console. -Huskyliner front splash guards -Fireband 2 way radio in center console. -Herculiner painted on hitch and skid plate. -Switch to power one 12v socket when truck is off. -AntiDark LED strip under hood with switch. -Timbren Rubber Springs - Rear -MBRP Offroad Cat-Back with Resonator -Duratrac's -Provisor -Color matched hood bug shield
i just keep hoping i need the total frame replacement so i don't need to go down this route. I just don't have time time to grind and paint the whole frame... I did the hitch 3 years after i got the truck with herculiner, and i did the inside of the rear bumper about 7 years in with plastidip. rust is just a fact of life in the north east.

Wow, this guy is hilarious! How have I missed him so far, lol! Pissing and moaning is definitely his strength.

I've had every make of truck and they've all had their issues, this one by far the least. Like, I hate my super tall reverse gearing, but I'll do something about it one day, not piss and moan about it for hours to y'all, lol.

This has been one of the few vehicles I'll keep for 10 years or more. Wrangler being the other. Now it has a few more issues, but I fix them, usually with a stronger part, cause it's fun as hell. Only TJ or earlier, mind you, lol. Got to have that AMC straight 6 and a 5 speed. :burnrubber: Can't do the new Fiat shit they through in them now, no offense.

No, Fiat shit in new Dodge and Jeeps. Well any Chrysler really. Reason I was saying I'll stick with TJ and it's AMC 4.0, pretty bullet proof too. Dana's also. Man trans wasn't that great, but I found a dude that rebuilds them with Toyota gears, lol. Go figure.

Saving this thread for later, being that I have a Canadian Tacoma and my local Toyota dealers have said that it [the TSB recalls] can't be serviced in the U.S.

Well I have never received a recall notice on my 2007 OR I've read that the inspection period is over so I started cleaning my frame. I bought a new compressor and needle scaler and so far it's working well on flaking rust but what I thought was a one inch crack on the inside frame coming off a punched hole by the cat is about 3 inches after using the needle scaler. So it looks like I will need to do some welding before I start cleaning again.

What an incredible amount of work! Not sure what takes longer, this, or a class-action lawsuit against Toyota.

    The results look great though.
