Rooftop tent security

I should be getting my KBVoodoo rack today (stoked!), but I was curious if you guys have any ideas for added theft protection for a RTT? I really cant justify buying 100 tuff nuts when I only need 8-10...

 

I've been using these for a few items on my truck. Hopefully they have your size, and you don't have to buy in bulk. Also, if someone really wants to steal my RTT they're gonna need some help. Mine weighs 220lbs. Good luck.

You plan on leaving the RTT on even when you aren't camping?

 

Yeah that was the plan

 

I would remove it when not using it.

Constant exposure to sun, weather, and simply driving down the road will all greatly accelerate the wear of the cover.

And I could also see humidity getting under the cover and mildewing your tent after constant exposure to weather.

When/If you store it, be sure to pack some Bounce dryer sheets around it to deter mice.

 

Ive thought about that...if I can hang my RTT easily than I will take it off...time for some "southern engineering"

 

@2015whitetaco left his on year round with no issues in the rainy/cold sunny/hot north CA weather, so I wouldn't be overly paranoid. Cover didn't look new, but neither was the tent.. definitely didn't show accelerated wear.

Caution is due, they're not cheap.. but you have some time to plan for a better system. Lots of time.

@tacomgee had his get mildewy and all it took was a complete soak with the garden hose, scrubbing with some Woolite or bleach (I don't recall) and a gentle nylon brush, and then let it sit open in my garage for 3 days until it's completely dry.

If you have an issue like that, your tent manufacturer can give you the details on how they recommend fixing things.

 

I plan to mount a channel on my all pro rack when it gets here and basically slide the rtt into the channel and use 4 pins to secure it one of them will be a locking pin such as the ones used for hitches. This will allow security and will be easy to remove the tent when not in use.

Makes sense. I've seen how some jeepers hang their hardtops so I am planning to try something similar. Anyone out there have pics of a RTT hung from the garage ceiling?

I have the same hoist system in my garage. This makes it a one man job and life much easier.

I have a feeling that about 90 percent of people with RTT's just have them because its a necessary accessory to complete their "overlanding" build image. You can't look look like an overlander if you remove the RTT so they leave them on.

Not saying this is the OP's situation but just sayin

 

I agree, but for me, not in the least. It was just an answer to the "my wife can't help me load this thing" problem

I've had my RTT for about 18 months and it hasn't spent a night outside yet if I'm not sleeping in it lol
