So I own a 2017 Tacoma SR5 2WD Double cab V6, the question I have is this truck considered a PreRunner?! Mind you it is not a TRD or such, I've noticed compared to the few years ago model the 2017 stock one I have seems more beefier & 4x4 ish even tho it's not lol Also my last question is besides this truck being stock can it still tackle basic easy off-roading? I mean it is a Toyota truck lol, I live in Cali & being this is my DD I would still like to take it out every once in a while to the desert or easy trails, I am not planning to rock crawl or crazy stuff, but I just wanna know how much can I throw at this truck if I was to really enjoy off-roading it here and there, granted I do wanna get some Bigger tires and possibly new shocks, thx family for your time!!

Prerunners are 2WD Tacomas on the same suspension as the 4WD ones.

You can take it on easy trails easily, however if you don't have experience offroad, I suggest not going into the soft sand in California. Or if you do, bring recovery gear, a shovel, and a friend. Remember to air down also, it helps a lot more than you think.

Go to a meet sometime. There always happening in Cali. You'll gain a lot of tips and learn to drive in certain offroad situations.

    Welcome to TW.

Every third gen truck is a Prerunner unless it's 4x4.

    Word.

Back in the second gen glory days, there were 3 configurations - 5 lug (2WD base), 6 lug Prerunner (4x2 with 4x4 suspension), and 6 lug 4x4.

In 2016 MY they killed off the 5 lug truck, so every truck is a Prerunner or a 4x4, and the only difference is the 4x4 components.

Also a 4x2 is plenty capable of light offroading, or more.. depends on the driver and the conditions.

Keep your eyes peeled on the 3rd gen marketplace in these forums. There's TONS of Cali folks selling gear that you can add to your truck! That's the one complaint I have about this website....all the good gear is on the coast opposite of me! :p

You will be fine. I have a 2WD and often find myself in places that I'm shocked I DON'T need 4WD for. Unless it's slick or you're in deep sand, your truck is probably more capable than you'd possibly imagine. I was just camping in a spot that the property owners typically only allow 4WDs to access, for example, and I climbed out of the place with zero drama.
