Posted this somewhere else on TW site. Thought I might get a response if I reposted here in the tec chat section. I'm a total novice on all of this so please feel free to make fun of me. I'm wanting to run 35x12.50 on my 2015 DCSB V6 auto but I'm worried about the loss of power on the hiway and offroading as well as the added stress on everything with the additional weight of the 35s. But they look so good! I've read a lot of the older post on the subject on TW but still have questions on what gear ratio is best. 4.88 seems to be popular.
I'm familiar with the fit - ment mods as far as cab chop and trimming. Currently running 33s, have 2.5 " of lift up front, running the heavy OME 886 coils and OME 9000 sport struts for additional armored bumper and winch weight. In the rear I have aprox 2.75 " lift with heavy duty OME Dakar leaf packs & OME 60091 shocks. Wishing I had gone with more lift and known more about the wheel travel aspect before I started the modifications. Unfortunately the dealership that was helping & installed my suspension modifications knew less than I did. All they seemed to offer was the block style lift/ leveling kits. I've read a lot of the older TW Post everyone seams to have a minimum of 3" and up of lift that are running 35s. Not sure whether it's over 2.5" or 3" of lift I've read you need to change the UCA to maintain the alignment? I have the rear e-locker and have read you have to add the front locker to change the gears up front. Is that correct?? Thanks anyone.

The ride height of your truck has no impact on the size of tires you can run, unless you get a DB lift. In general, 3" is about max for a suspension lift for a 4x4 Tacoma.
No you do not need a locker in order to change gear ratios in the front differential, however it is a good time to install one if you think you'll want one in the future.
Yes UCA's will help with alignment, but they're not crucial unless your alignment is totally fubar.

Thanks for your response. Thinking I might try some front spacers to get to 3" and see what happens with the alignment before new UCAs. Presently have no alignment issue. I need to research what kind of cost is involved in parts & labor for re gear and decide how much to budget espessially if I add the front locker. Are you running 315/75/16 tires? Did you re gear? Can I ask if you run a sway bar or not? Ive know it doesnt provide any more wheel travel but I read it does allow the front wheels to work more inpendeantly of each other climbing or dropping in when your all tweeked, angled, contorted. Thanks

For 35s you want to run 4.56 gears. No you do not need a locker to install them.

Yep I'm running 315/75R16 tires, with 4.56 gears. I should have geared it lower (numerically higher) but I didn't think I would go with this tire size. I got rid of my sway bar long ago, if you're running sufficiently stiff front springs (650 lbs/in or more) you won't need it. You are correct, removing the sway bar allows the front suspension to move more independently when flexing over stuff.
Your best bet for a regear and locker install is to buy a pre-built third member from somewhere like East Coast Gear Supply with everything you want in it, then swapping it into your truck and sending your old one back as a core. For gears and ARB locker in the front diff, that'll run you about $1500.

Keep seeing some post saying 4.56 some 4.88. But I now know you experienced this 1st hand so I'm leaning 4.88. I'm guessing that's the same for 2nd gen tacomas? The around $1500. Estimate must be doing the labor one self? A pre built 3rd member with everything I want (4.88 gears) ? I know nothing about this, that does'nt that take care of front & rear? Sorry I'm clueless here!
Thanks for your input on the sway bar, I got the heavy 886 coils (660lb rated). I see your running both steel bumper & winch so I'm guessing the combined weight of my steel bumper & winch (just over 200lbs) wont negate that? Thanks for everyone's input.

That estimate was just for the front diff, you would need to do the rear to match as well. I have no experience with a 2nd gen, it seems like they can get by without regearing but I would imagine there would be a fair amount of power loss.
Sounds like your suspension setup would be fine for the weight of bumpers, etc without sagging. As was noted above, you'll definitely have to do some cutting though for the tires.

I am up in denver, and running 4.56s with 235/85/16s (32s) in my 2006 dcsb..... and its perfectly great. So anything above a 32 i would go 4.88s.

East Coast Gear supply - for built diffs shipped to your door is about $1320 (front and rear). Ive bought about 5 diffs from them and never had a problem with them. Make sure to upgrade your front diff drivers side bushing. Then add about $100 for gear lube and misc stuff.

35s with 4.56 gears gets you closest to stock ratio.

You can run 4.88 if you want it will give you more down low but lose on the top end.

Don't second gens have 4:10s though? Third gens have 4:30s and 4:88 would be closer to stock for them.

Thanks for all the gear input everyone. My pelfrey front and rear hi clearance bumpers I order shipped yesterday. Expecting to have them by the 4th, then another week to be powder coated. Got a new warn M8 winch setting in the garage. Hoping to get a 20" led and spots here soon enough not to hold up the install. Hopefully can find a couple 3 days & recruit some help to get everything on. Have time to decide on gear size. I have to get some more life out of my current 33s that only have 20k on them. I kind of wish they were worn out so I could go 35s now. Can't afford it now anyways. When I bought my 2007 boat they ask me if I new what boat stands for? Break out another thousand. I think my Tacoma much worse. Thought about selling the boat for all my mods at once. It wouldn't be enough and it didn't go over well with anyone round here. That's alright more time to make better more informed decisions and I would probably end up regretting it.

you can run with stock gearing but you will like a regear 1000x more than leaving it stock. With a 3rd gen its a must.
