Meh. It doesn't need to be nipped super close to the plant. Within a few inches or so. Once you cut it the plant won't start another one, so it's not too important where you cut it.

Damn. My garden still has snow covering it. I'm looking at 3 weeks before putting broccoli, peas, carrots, and onions in. Won't even think about peppers or tomatoes until mid to late May.

    I'm :jellydance:

Yeah, mine too. It was 8 degrees here this morning, and it's supposed to snow tomorrow night, lol.

I hadn't heard that, but it makes sense. I will leave 1 or two because it will generat a bunch of bulbis (essentially seeds). You can then plant them for green garlic (think green onions) or then replant them for a full garlic head.

onions are the same...cut the scape to promote better growth of the onion.
Let the garlic plant grow until it dries up, hopefully before the first frost.

we just got most of the snow cleared in the last week...still freezes here till almost June. But I'll start planting the second week of May hopefully

I've been tinkering with one off and on for my garden, but I want it to be gravity-fed and without purchasing the dripper thingies, so it's an ongoing experiment.

Yeah, but it's pressurized by a hose from the house, right?
I collect rainwater, so I'd want a way to drip irrigate from those without adding a pump. :notsure:

    I did.
Amazing tomatoes. Grew oak trees from acorn last year so no garden.
But i did a big loop. A grid. No dead legs. And used adjustable drippers.
    Will do it again.

There should be a way to pressurize the rain barrel with the faucet/hose?

Well sure, but if I'm doing that I may as well just run the hose out to the garden instead...
The rain drums are so that I'm not draining my well to water my garden, so if I'm running the hose to them to pressurize them I'm still draining the well to water the garden.

I was just wondering if you had a sealed system the water pressure from the faucet might force the water out if the rain barrel. Probably a hare brained idea.
