Oh, as far as the knee injury goes... your gonna need to figure out what's up with it. The Army WILL destroy your knees for you, if you go in injured your likely to be on a walking profile or med boarded out. Go see a specialist and see what's up with it. Don't mess around and jack your knee up.

Thank you for the input. I been trying to run every day I haven't ran past two days stuck watching my 1 year of le nephew but tomorrow definitely going run again. My dad was went through ROTC and in the 82nd his knee on his left side is okay but not good so I know it will kill them. I was bucked off a horse about 11 years ago and landed on my left one hat was the start of it. I'm hoping it's because I haven't exercised a lot in two years. I do likes the 30:120s thank you for that I'm going to start that. I'm really shooting for the active duty slot so I'm hoping it gets better.

I agree with the above comments. As mentioned by jswhitaker the best way to improve speed is by running fast. Alternating short fast periods with longer slower periods. This will work wonders. Regarding you knee pain. Do not run through it, you risk permanent damage. If it is weakness in knee run until just before it begins to hurt. Every week or two run longer to see if pain occurs. If you are lucky your running with strengthen you knee and eventually you can run distances with no pain.

Thanks and Yeah I ran a mile in 7 minutes few days ago. Went to the doctor he said couldn't find anything wrong with that knee but he did say I have a shinsplints on that leg so been dealing with that. I have been doing the sprinting and resting one that does seem to help and when I sprint there is no pain just jogging. Got about few different pairs of shoes and working on a different form. I know it's just going to take awhile. Thank you for the advice.

As an Ironman, I would highly suggest you first check with your Dr. Secound, get with your local running club that works with a pediatrist who can watch

...run, check your feet, arch, etc. to recommend the best shoe to start running in. Are you a heal striker, toe runner, or neutral strike runner. Running shoes are now designed with these things in mind. After you get properly fitted, I would suggest you research the best local running clubs. They can be a great resource for information like proper running techniques, stride, turn over rate, how to not run to far to fast, pre run stretch, hip flexor, Achilles, calf, hamstrings, etc.
The main thing once you start is to not over due it. Listen to your body and listen to a coach who can set you up with a program to safely get you to the results you are looking to achieve.

X-Runner here (haha see that, I just did a Taco pun)

What has helped me with speed the most in the past at 400m and 800m intervals. Running 400m with 400m recovery jogs in between or 800m runs and 400m jogs in between. Basically run the faster intervals as fast as I can where I could do 3-4 sets and NOT have to slow down. I usually did them on the treadmill so I could control my speed.

Also, run with a little kid, them things are fast! I did a 5 mile run with my 12 y/o niece recently (first one in years). She about killed me.

Put on one of these suits and have someone let a few rabid dogs loose. Once the adrenaline kicks in you'll be running much faster than ever before.

hadn't heard about not stretching before a run. I'm prone to stiff muscles and have always had to do longer warm ups and extra stretching before runs. Even in high school and college. My speed suffers when I don't do enough stretching. I often jog/walk a mile and stretch 5-10 minutes just for a 5k race.

Stretching before a run cause prefatigue of smaller muscles which would make someone more prone to injury. So static stretching should be avoided prior to activity and dynamic stretches can be done before though.

can you clarify static vs dynamic stretching?
