I don't know how I missed seeing this thread before! The beach is one of the main reasons I have always wanted a 4WD vehicle... since I was a teenager in the 70s! That beach is but one of the many fantastic and isolated sand beaches of Baja California, Mexico... where my 2010 Tacoma was made!

This first photo is at Bahía San Rafael, almost halfway down the east side of the peninsula. The rest are all at Shell Island, about 20 miles south of San Felipe or 150 miles south of the border, on the east coast of Baja.

Cannon Beach, OR. Was a short drive on the beach, sun was going down fast and didn't explor much.

 

I am guessing your Gulf of Mexico beaches are similar to my Gulf of California beaches, just more people? Nice deep sand, no waves (other than those created by wind), you can drive on much of it, and maybe the biggest difference (besides being in Mexico) is the huge tides there are in the upper Gulf of California (over 20 verticle feet between low and high tide, depending on the lunar phase).


I am on the wet sand from the previous high tide. In just a few hours, if I didn't move, my truck would be under water. See where the wet and dry sand meet, at the top of the sloping beach? Collecting shells is amazing here.
